Rusholme’s curry mile

Don’t usually drive through Rusholme but I did the other day. I knew that most of the Indian/Pakistani restaurants had gone but there were pretty much none left. Even the Shere Khan has gone. More or less all Middle Eastern now. The Curry Mile needs a new name.

Sad to hear. We used to nosh up at Shere Khan all the time, before hitting up 42s or 5th Av afterwards for some random snogs.

No rusholme chippy been there for as long as I can remember used to go Maine road days after match with my dad and it’s not fish and chips it’s kebabs

Friday night out if no good gig on at the squat . UMIST , Conti , Plaza . Used to go there at lunchtime too at the back of MRI .

Very fond memories.

It was the late eighties and nineties when I spent more time in Rusholme than I care to mention. Threads from RipRap and turmeric stains for my mum to dissolve!

Shami, from Saajan; Kobeda, from Rusholme chippy; Shere Khan and Sanam with the girlfriends, and then later on, Lamb chops from Al Madina!

The Plaza was definitely one of my faves though. Curry sauce in milk-bottles, students ordering curry they couldn't eat, and Charlie's chili powder defence for any trouble (in the eyes he told me). I saw more fellas fall asleep with their heads on their plate than anything else - good times people watching.
