Thank you Vladimir! There has always been a significant majority - perhaps a supermajority - in the Donbas that historically would have wanted this. At some point subsequent to or around 2014 I believe the Donbas voted to join Russia (Putin didn't want it - probably thought this too provocative.)
Going forward, who knows? Russia probably not going to be the greatest place to be.
But neither Ukraine. Horrifically poor, corrupt, riddled with neo-Nazis and being used cynically by the West to bleed Russia. Also a place that outlawed the Russian language which a lot of people there spoke exclusively.
No good guys in this horror I think other than the innocent people fighting for their lives. I hope anyone wanting to get out of that sad part of the world will at least be welcomed and supported when and where they do.
Especially as the Russian Russians seem mostly to be attacking cities where most of the people are Russian-speaking Ukrainians (whether or not sympathetic to Putin). If Putin wins I doubt they'd be getting cities rebuilt as quickly as they would with "western" aid. That would be "Putin's Russia' that is now certain to become a place of utter austerity and international pariah
It seems a less attractive option than it would have a few months ago
Oopsie
Similar situations have arisen before. For example, Britain, full of bookmakers, cynically used the gambling fraternity of Monaco to bleed France dry; mafia ridden Italy brought South Wales to its knees with pistachio ice cream, Spain poisoned Britain by exporting patatas bravas. Complete pimenton riddled bastards. When will they ever learn? There has always been a significant majority - perhaps a supermajority - in the Donbas that historically would have wanted this. The separatist presence in Donbas wasn't invited, it wasn't called upon, there was never any legitimate right for Russia to enter and annex Crimea or now Donbas. There has always been a significant majority - perhaps a supermajority - in the Donbas that historically would have wanted this.
