Russian invasion of Ukraine

You only have to look at the oryxspionkop website to see the huge amounts of Russian armour and vehicles that are being captured or abandoned every day, it outweighs that being destroyed.

Which would imply the soldiers are not up for the fight and are deserting or that they cant supply the front line with food, fuel and ammunition etc?

A combination of the two, likely.

The Russian army has little combat experience in a generation and, seemingly, they were sold a lie.

I also think the veneer has been exposed on much of their weapons, wars for a different age.

Nobody needs a tank now.

Embarrassing how many on here wanted a full Ukrainian surrender in the first few days. Long way to go but they’re very much in charge of their own sovereignty still whilst Russia is being destroyed economically.

The irony is, the longer Ukraine keeps fighting, the worse it gets for Putin and Russia as a whole.

Their own figures show half get approved
Applications approx 59,000
Approved approx 25,000
Difference 34,000.
I have seen no breakdown of the 34,000 into refused and pending.
A big problem seems to be disorganization in the process, with even approved applications getting stuck in the system and nobody taking responsibility for sorting it out.
A characteristic of this gov is sweeping statements about schemes but no attention to detail. The covid vaccination prog was successful because it was taken out of the hands of civil servants and headed up by an outsider.
Fact is, many of our departments are not fit for purpose. The civil service has no cadre of people who have experience of actually organizing and delivering mass services in time critical circumstances.
They concentrate on process, but not results.

I think Putin is up shit creek without a paddle. The fact that his senior advisers are too scared to tell him the truth rings true for me. I've seen the same in British industry where people will manipulate figures and the truth to avoid an "awkward" situation, all the while accepting that Ukraine is a totally different proposition.

U.S. intelligence believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin feels misled by the Russian military, a U.S. official said in a statement Wednesday, describing “persistent tension” between Putin and the Russian Defense Ministry’s leadership.
“Putin didn’t even know his military was using and losing conscripts in Ukraine, showing a clear breakdown in the flow of accurate information to the Russian President,” the U.S. official said in the statement, speaking on the condition of anonymity under rules set by the Biden administration.
“We believe that Putin is being misinformed by his advisers about how badly the Russian military is performing and how the Russian economy is being crippled by sanctions, because his senior advisers are too afraid to tell him the truth,” the U.S. official added.
In the lead-up to Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, U.S. intelligence emphasized that Putin was being misled by his close advisers about the feasibility of a multi-front invasion of Ukraine.
That information is part of what led U.S. officials to be so concerned about the possibility of an invasion, because the Biden administration came to believe that Putin was not receiving a full picture of how difficult such a broad military operation would be.

If you were Ukranian and had achieved what you had so far against the Russian War machine, had a continuous supply of arms and you know what the Russians have done to the cities of Muripol and Khakiv and such like with the resulting deaths of thousands of civilians. Why on earth would you negotiate and agree to any demeaning surrender terms.

You would 100% fight on.

I think a lot of people were just worried the mad **** would start using nukes

I think this is very likely entirely true.

It may also be true that the war, even whilst being lost on the ground, is helping Putin. Polling seems to show unprecedentedly good ratings for him, his entire leadership publicly pledged loyalty to him and his war, and he's able to use it to further repress free speech and opposition. A long and bloody conflict to hold on to Donbas and perhaps the Azov coast land bridge to Crimea might be winnable for Russia through sheer force of arms, and from a perspective of reinforcing Putin's hold on power, be a triumph. Even if (maybe even especially if) it impoverishes the rest of Russia. There are plenty of examples (Saddam post Iraq war I, North Korea, Iran etc).

I will be making no predictions how this turns out. I've no idea.

The Telegraphs You Tube Audios of Russian Front Line Troops communication lines are fascinating along with the Ukrainians hacking into them - “better to be a deserter than Fertiliser”
Stuck there freezing under fire waiting for the logistics to catch up for hours/days on end in a part of the world which looks exactly like your own complete with people and Babushkas that look just like yours it’s not what you need to hear
