Some good news. As I have been alluding to recently the Ukrainian Kherson offensive is gathering steam and the Russian lines are starting to give ground as per the Kharkiv offensive a month or so ago.

I'm not sure how the treaty of Maastricht is central to this war/invasion? Even Russian sympathisers were saying both sides wanted Ukraine as a buffer/client kingdom, no mention of the social charter.

It's a bit of a reach. I think it's more about them wanting to stick two fingers up at Putin than a love for the EU tbh. Zelensky would probably apply to join the United States if he could.
 
The EU thing has been in progress for years, very slow paced as neither the EU or Ukraine are close to ready.

Steps were started in 2012. Paused due to a pro Russian President, started again. I’m 2016 they joined the free trade zone.

That all said, for me, this request is 2 fold. 1 an up yours to Putin. 2 being part of the EU enters you into a defence pact. It’s not as strict as NATO or anything but there is a defence pact that basically says all member states must defend any state that is attacked ( nato obligations get in the way for some )
 
China and Russia cosying up again. Probably means the war will go on for a while, especially if China helps Russia financially.
