About 3 week ago Putin himself said "Sumy Region must be Russian"
Today he says "We have no goal of taking Sumy, but I do not rule it out"

This must be after he has seen images/footage of the Russian corpses lying in the fields of Sumy Region.
The Russians in the area call them "the fields of death"

I may be wrong on this but Russia/ Putin have obviously calculated that Iran is a lost cause/ useful sacrifice as they clearly like/ want/ created the distraction with Israel/ Gaza as they want the west distracted from helping Ukraine.

Hopefully the EU doesn't get distracted and keeps helping Ukraine out.. the EU is Ukraine's last hope imho!

There’s been a calculation by Putin alright, but not exactly the one you describe.

He’s calculated that a compliant and subservient Trump is of more strategic value to him than a supportive Iran, especially in the current circumstances where Iran’s ability to lend its support is severely hampered.

I’d say his calculation is, lamentably, correct.

At the Russian economic forum in St. Petersburg. Putinn in a speech to the forum on 20th claimed all of Ukraine.
