As a person with complete military ignorance, can anybody explain what’s happening tonight please?

Without the sarcasm (if possible)…

As far as I can tell (and as much as anything so someone can correct my understanding):

A big part of the Russian front line is the Wagner group, often/usually described as mercenaries.
The head of Wagner has been moaning for ages about lack of support.
Today, he's complained of being shelled by the Russians and has pretty much called out the Russian war leader.
Cue criminal charges, military cordons, etc.

So a big part of the Russian force has turned on a bigger part of the Russian force. Outcome tbc.

In very brief terms - The head of Russia's largest affiliated private military organisation (Prigozhin - the Head of Wagner PMC) has declared war on the Russian Ministry of Defense. This is significant as Wagner were a major component of Russia's offensive in Ukraine.

This is a culmination of many weeks of Prigozhin calling out the Russian military for their incompetence. Important to note, he hasn't directly called out Putin. His truck seems to be with the Defence Minister (Shoigu) and other high ranking generals.

The Prosecutor General has now ordered Prigozhin to be arrested for armed insurrection.

These are the facts, the rest is speculation. That speculation being that Russia is now locking down its major political institutions with military security. There are some indications that Wagner are going to try and fight their way into Russia, but the truth is nobody even really knows where they are right now.

If you want to know what Russia was doing in cahoots with a private military organisation in the first place, that's a whole other story.

This so called 'insurrection' could be stage managed by the Kremlin to excuse the elimination of the Wagner mob. No doubt these ' traitors' will be described as being in the pay of the west and the therefore the fight to svfe Russia will continue. Utter Bollocks of course but Putin has long since abandoned logic. Nice to see this special operation going tits up ,but with a madman in charge it's dangerous times for the world.

I think it very well could be stage managed but if it is then I think the motivations are more likely to be a choreographed attempt to pull out of Ukraine to 'defend home' without Putin losing support.

I suspect Putin and Prigo are still on good terms. Prigo criticises everybody except for Putin.
