FRONTLINE 8-9 JANUARY
The weather dominates the situation along almost the entire front. Movement has become difficult and 95% of the front line is static.
However the Russians made a major effort around Terny in the centre of the Eastern front as they sniff weakness there. It seems Ukraine decided to remind them it was never going to be easy and the ISW reports major manpower and machinery losses for the Russians in their latest attempts - as well no gains for their trouble.
The Avdivka area has continued to see heavy fighting but it’s much more
localised into small areas rather than being a concentrated offensive. Russian aircraft have resumed their bombing runs when the weather allows. The Russians have made very small gains, in single figures of meters in just two areas.
The Russians continue to advance along the Marinka reservoir on both sides.
Elsehwere the situation is generally static with occasional rounds fighting. The cold is deep with temperatures expected to reach -18C (-0.4F) in the Bakhmut area by Saturday.
