Russian invasion of Ukraine

EU confident of Orbán U-turn on allowing money to Ukraine - Politico

Talks continue over how to enable Hungarian government to save face ― while still getting Kyiv its cash.

BRUSSELS ― Budapest has signaled to the EU that it is ready to lift its opposition to funding Ukraine ― as negotiations continue on sweeteners that would make it easier for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to climb down.

According to several European diplomats and officials, Orbán is edging closer to accepting a compromise to use money from the bloc's budget, even though a deal is likely to fall short of demands he made in the aftermath of last month's failed summit.

Orbán blocked a €50 billion four-year funding package to the war-torn country in December ― a move he was able to make because it needed unanimous support from the EU's 27 governments ― prompting Europe's leaders to consider breaking with the bloc's hallowed principle of unity and finding a way to circumvent him.

But since then, both sides have pulled back from the brink and are now involved in a delicate dance over how to get the decision over the line when Orbán and other leaders meet in Brussels on February 1.

While there is still no agreement over what concessions to offer Hungary in return, and what it might accept, the EU is now confident that a deal can be done over the next couple of weeks, according to the diplomats and officials who spoke to POLITICO on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks.

Bundestag vote for sending Taurus to Ukraine.
485 against......178 in favour.

Slava Ukraini.
This vote doesn't represent the opinion of the parliament about this sole Taurus topic,
as many members of all main parties didn't agree today to use a regular presentation of the 2022 report about issues of German soldiers held by the Bundestag's defense policy spokesperson to combine it with a Taurus voting.

Even the 197 members of the opposing Christ Democrats who were pushing for this vote didn't fully agree to this unconventional move.

It's mainly a formal issue about parliamentary methods and certainly not a clear Bundestag vote against a Taurus delivery. I guess that would be much closer, if not slightly pro Taurus. IMO.

It's no news that in contrast to parts of the social democrats lead by Scholz, major parts of the Liberal as well as Green party are in favour of a Taurus delivery.

Chancellor Scholz still doesn't move and prefers to stay silent.

The decision about Taurus lies in the office of chancellor alone, not the Parliament. As long as the gov coalition around Scholz exists, parliament voting about Taurus are toothless.

No idea really what Taurus could do or not. I thought the bridge would fall in autumn and Crimea would be targeted. It all didn't happen and now I am clueless about the further development or strategy.

Taurus is a cruise missile not a nuke, I don't understand why Germany hasn't already sent them. Perhaps someone can explain why it's a big deal in Germany?
