He won't foreshorten his life by much anyway.

He does have a wife, children, grandchildren though and I would like to think that even Putin gives a shit about his offsprings futures after he has departed the mortal coil

think China just weighs up whether it can get what it wants with or without Putin. 2bh, I don't really see why'd they want all the hassle of backing up Putin when they'll have close ties to Russia whoever replaced him.

I agree, that is correct in the here and now. My point was more aimed at the future I suppose, 20 years down the line, that we could possibly start to see a shift in global reserve. E.g. the dollar has constricted ~17% (71% to 59%) of the global reserve in 20 years while China is a very new player due to their weird domestic currency laws, but grows steadily year on year (currently only ~3%, as i say this is biased by the fact they continue to hold currency domestically). China's economy is huge so you feel they have a lot more to offer.

Anyway, my point was also that we may begin to see the required structures being put in place for a decoupling of the global economy into two systems, something long predicted as China has proclaimed to want to look more domestically. I think that will all depend on 3rd parties outside of Russia/China.

All the initial reports were saying Putin had made contingencies for the economic backlash, are you saying they're greater than he anticipated and the Russian economy is in real danger of toppling over?

The consensus of thinking seems to be;

He knew there would be sanctions, but didn't expect them to be this bad.
He thought the invasion would be further along by this point.

It's difficult to make too many assumptions based on that, but that's the line of thinking.

I think his contingencies would have been for less strict sanctions as this was meant to be a quick win for him. He wanted to capture Ukraine before anything could be done about it. Now he is bogged down and the world is horrified at him the sanctions are going to cut deeper than he ever imagined.
