The central reason he shouldn't have been nominated is that it's a yearly award based on performance for the last 12 months...on that criteria he has no case for winning. The player of the year stuff was a similaly honourary award again wrongly given.

He has had a great career, and you could make a case for a lifetime achievement award when he retires, but no way sports personality of the year.

I would have gone for Ennis, in a year where she came back from career threatening injury, and became World Champion with a terrific dominant performance.
