With Chelsea now on 77pts, its certain that our title challenge is now over.
If only there were a few more games left, I'm sure we'd have done it..

I wonder how long its been since it went to the last 5 games before it was mathematically impossible for us to win it..?.!
Mind you, there's still goal difference.

would of been very interesting if we would of won them 3 games at home we drawn on the bounce, which realistically we should of had no problems winning, hull, fulham and burnley, we'd be probably 3rd now 4 points off the league,

not turning it into a hughes in or out debate, but that was one of the many reasons he got the chop and why he wasn't good enough.

when you think about it, we were only those silly home draws and the daylight robbery at the swamp away from being in real contention. So if the other three members of the top 4 don't improve considerably in the off-season, in terms of signings, how much tinkering do we really need to do to have a real tilt at it next year? Not to mention changing manager mid-term, the considerable absences of Ade, Tevez jetting off to Argentina, the centre-back pairing(s) taking time to gel etc, etc. We'll be a better team next season even without further investment. And you can bet there will be further investment! We live in interesting times.

Exactly... thats how fuckin close we were.!

Way beyond my expectations, but make no mistake..we were actually capable of winning it.
We have a fantastic team who have just needed time to click, and when you look at how unsettled its been, especially for the back 4 (we have had a staggering 21 combinations and not had the same 4 for more than 5 games) our players have been immense.
I don't think we need to make any more than 2 top drawer signings for next season, any more could affect the team morale we've built.

-- Wed Apr 14, 2010 1:28 am --

It is the fault of the fornicator, Hughes.

Mmmm... except for the small contribution he made by signing the players.

They were mostly no brainers, those signings. Any one of us could bring in good players when we're given £250 million. The trick was to get the best out them and Hughes blew it.

Another pathetic Hughes out thread, course bob has been perfect, not put a foot wrong.

Only on bluemoon.

No point in any Huges out debate, pathetic or otherwise, because he's already long gone.

Fact is that had we won more games that we definitely should have won, we would have been in with a chance of the title. Next year will be different, providing the manager isn't changed again.

Next season it'll be much, much more difficult for us in the Prem, purely for the fact that we'll be playing European football and that will put an immense strain on our current squad.
You say a bit further into your post there will be further investment. Well that's an absolute necessity if we are to compete at home and in Europe.

true, what would have helped though would be to attack hull, attack everton and attack sunderland, there's 8 points gone. works both ways.
anyway it will be different next season, we could certainly do with no more disruption esp mid season.

Lol, you really are clutching at straws bobby

Everton simply outplayed us, didn't allow us to come at them thus we were well beaten, no biggy, they've done it to all the top 4 this season. Now sunderland..... behave, we did nothing but attack in that second half, 16 shots, 12 on target, only a superb performance by gordon prevented us dicking them. Continuously comparing Hughes to Mancini is laughable mate, hence your attitude has changed towards mancio because in reality you know it was the right decision

Continuously comparing Hughes to Mancini is laughable mate,
i have'nt, everyone else does.
mancini got it wrong, good and proper, like it or not its the truth. my thinking of him has'nt changed, he's a good manager, its him that has changed to our english game and not before time.
its this new attitude he has that makes me think jose can stick his ego and we'll keep bob thank you very much.

had we carried on playing only the second half of games or treating hull as world beaters he would have been long gone in the summer as we would have finished 10th and half the squad wanting to leave.

fuck all to do with hughes but the sheep with throw some stats out to make hughes look bad, we did after all lose 2 games under him.

all i can say is ...."Sparky ... gives us back the 16 points dropped that we should had won easily!"

We started of more cautious and have gradually had the shackles taken off, but i don't think it's adapting to the league, i think it was the plan all along. Mancini comes in and his first priority has to be sorting out the defence, because it was a shambles. All his initial training sessions were based on maintaining shape, practicing zonal defence etc, a more cautious style of play was just him being pragmatic whilst we were adapting to this transition, getting used to a new style of play and also to protect the likes of Boyata when we had the major injury crisis. Since then they've started working more on attacking play, working the ball, the Tevez and Ade partenship. We've got our senior defenders back and they've spent a while playing the way Bobby wants them to, so now they're organised at the back, it's possible to play a slightly more expansive style.

But the first priority was the defencesive organisation without a doubt, we went back to basics and started from the beginning, a pretty good acheivement to come in midseason and get us sorted out so quickly. It might have been a nightmare if we'd tried to play attacking football whilst compeltely reorganising the defence from scratch.

Obviously there will be a degree of learning involved, getting to know his players, the opposition, every good manager learns, but his Inter team were one of the most attacking in the Serie A. I don't think his plan was to come here and play dour, cautious football forever.
