Sandro Tonali

I don’t get the love in on this guy all the same noises we heard with Phillips and look how that turned out

Paucity of the geuine quality for the specific role that Rodri provides.

Lesser abilities and smaller pond syndrome .

I wouldnt go that far but I do think he is someone we dont necessarily need if we get Anderson....We have other players in that area that are as good (Nico G) and better (rodri)

Pep will now only play witha. single pivot (Rodri or Nico G). If Anderson fills one of the other spaces in midfield and he is more box to box a then there is no need for Tonali...we also have NOR as well who can play 8 or 10 role...plus foden and cherki who are both 10's

So to cover the 6 position we have Rodri and Nico G
8 - Anderson (?), Reijners - who is crap but he aint going to be sold after one season and NOR
10's -Cherki, Foden

What we do need is wide creative players - we have Doku at present and potentially Semenyo (though Im not sure he fits this role)...Sav is not good enough and hopefully will go - we are short in this area

If Rodri leaves replacing him with Tonali is too big a downgrade...you have to go and get next best in class if Rodri leaves

Tonali is a cracking player and just the right age with prem experience, he is also obtainable unlike Pedri, Szoboszlai, Vitinha, Neves, Valverde that we just couldn't get

Only just realised Tonali is 25
Would definitely be looking at him
If we could get him it’s a no brainer
But I reckon rags would pay more than us
Anderson and Wharton would be nice

If Rodri goes it will be Anderson and Tonali though?
Too similar. If we sign two midfielders one will be more of a ball player, Wharton type. Anderson and Tonali are more box to box, although I think Anderson is better suited to playing as a 6 for us.

Ultimately when replacing Rodri, you need to sign two players. One who can be that physical, defensive presence and one who can orchestrate play from deep. There's nobody else out there who can do both like Rodri can.

Rodri right now is only a shadow of what he used to be 2 years ago, it won't be that big of a blow. We went 8/8 wins in December (including Madrid away) with Nico G. Anderson+Nico G or Anderson+Tonali (in case Nico G also leaves) would be more than fine.

To our detriment
If he wants to go that is. Club has always said if a player wants to go and there’s a suitable offer it will happen.

I agree with you that’s he’s a fantastic player. But Donnarumma is number 1 (which I agree with, he’s world class) and Trafford deserves the chance to be the first choice somewhere.

I genuinely can't think of a single similarity between Tonali and Phillips. Other than being midfielders they have absolutely nothing in common.

The trouble with players like Tonali, is they shine at a mid-table club, but don’t always step up. On the other hand Ake and Semenyo have done OK for us, TBH I haven’t seen enough of Tonali to make an informed comment, but I’m sure City’s scouts are better informed than any of us.

And where has he said he wants to go?

Newcastle aren’t a midtable club, they’re a CL side in an offseason after selling their striker for £150m and not having the wages to replace him because of PSR.

For me, Tonali has shown he’s good enough in the last couple of months when Guimaraes has been out. He went from supporting #6 to running Newcastles entire midfield attack and defence, started scoring and creating goals while still doing a lot of work off the ball.

I’m not sure him and Anderson are a perfect pairing for Pep as they’re both a bit “do it all” as opposed to specialists. Ideally we’d have Rodri+Anderson or Tonali+ an attacking threat, ie a back in form Foden or a more mature Cherki. At that point you’re getting back towards a midfield like Fernandinho-De Bruyne-Silva as opposed to our current Rodri-NOR-Bernardo set up which lacks an obvious creator around the box.
