She comes across as a bit of a loony to me. Especially after statements like this:
<a class="postlink" href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7653132.stm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" target="_blank">http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7653132.stm</a>
Let's face it: McCain's old, so she's going to get a fair chunk of power if they get elected. It's statements like this which make me wonder what she's going to do with it.
Thoughts?

she is thick as shit

So the republicans are going for the terrorist angle. They'll go for the rest of the world wants Obama and as americans we won't be told who to vote for our next president next....

As she starts to answer, she is looking like she really wants to say something smart...

She looks like she's just parrotting some line she's already been fed, without understanding quite what she's been told.

she's a stupid cow but it's very disturbing that millions of americans will vote for mccain and his carer just like they did for the malevolent idiot dubya. mccain should stick to making frozen chips.

Neither do they forgive and forget.

She is photogenic - but that's all. Very little substance in heavyweight politics...

fucking hell, another genius blanket statement. Which america are you talking about? its easy to lump 300 million people together isn't it? you will find plenty of tolerance on most of either coast. Now most of the middle is backwards and intertolerant I'll give you that but I just can't get enough of the "Americans are racist" statements. 300 million people and their all racist, intolerant, red-necks. Well done. Insightful analysis.

thank you... enough with the blanket statements about americans, not true and not close to funny

perhaps, but from the outside its hard for people to understand why the likes of palin and bush are so popular when it comes to voting. the US produces so many brilliant minds it really is baffling - these people are clearly out of their depth.

On reflection... I guess I overstated the case. Full apology offered.

Just had personal experience of American-style 'intolerance' and I got carried away. Maybe I was focussed too much on 'middle America.'

No worries. As a yank, trust me I know "who" you are referring to.

I agree with you. I've lived here my whole life. Its a big, strange, multi-polar country. The more I travel and see other places and meet people, the less I understand it. I think the baffling complexity of the US has been inspiration to many of the "brilliant minds" as you put it.

I will say this. After WWII the US was the sole world power. At that point the US government realized that in order to retain this power Americans would need to buy into the idea and "keep in line" if you will. The US government worked with all sorts of institutions (media, defense, big business, interests groups) to ensure Americans would stay in line. Up to this point these institutions along with the US government have done a damn good job at keeping most Americans numb. Once the 60's hippie movement sprung up, the evangelicals made a bold move to get into politics. Up to that point evangelicals had a "hands off" approach to politics and actually respected (to a certain extent) the division of church and state. Afterall we are talking about Eisenhower's wholesome America. But when the hippie movement started that was the final straw for them. They viewed the country being overtaken by the devil and ever since then evangelicals (like Palin) have been invovled in politics.

I think that is a small piece of the puzzle to your original question. The rest has to do with our history.....manifest destiny........and all that shit

It seems you have very little clue in the value of her appointment! What do you see as 'heavyweight politics'? The stuff that goes on in the Senate? Meeting of international leaders?

Or keeping the nation distracted whilst trying to implement the status quo...??

Do you think the Republicans didn't do a demographic cross reference before they chose Palin? They didn't have much time, but they went with it and so far it's none too shabby for how they planned it.

Heavyweight politics, in many ways.

Ok Bigga, you made the point from your perspective and I respect that.

I'm sure we'd have to disagree, but I kinda go with what many commentators / bloggers are saying :

for example

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1845139,00.html?imw=Y" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" target="_blank">http://www.time.com/time/nation/article ... html?imw=Y</a>

<a class="postlink" href="http://my2bucks.wordpress.com/2008/09/02/a-letter-from-someone-who-has-known-sarah-palin-since-1992/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" target="_blank">http://my2bucks.wordpress.com/2008/09/0 ... ince-1992/</a>

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/alice_miles/article4662805.ece" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" target="_blank">http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/commen ... 662805.ece</a>

I thought Hillary C was a formidable candidate but I wouldn't measure Sarah P alongside her just yet.

Like I say, I want to disgree amicably - if that's possible.

I respect your post 1894 and wish to add that you merely underlined my point. Having just read two of the links, it confirms that even though Palin is NOT a suitable candidate, the Republicans are banking on the seige mentality of the 'hockey/ soccer moms' and the 'redneck/ babe hunter' voters to keep them afloat.

It IS working for them, in that regard and that's heavyweight politics to even go there for the status quo, imo. It's a safehaven.

Think about it... If Bush Jr. can be RE-ELECTED, then the pocket for success is there to defeat Obama. So adding to that the evangelist vote, the working mother/ big family vote and the ' she's a babe' vote and you have a ready made distraction without too much hard work. This thinking MUST have come into play, when choosing Palin as a running mate for McCain.
