The reason it took so long was that the VAR officials were desperately trying to find an angle that showed rat face onside.

The VAR officials only have an input in the new automatic offside system by determining when the ball was played, AI does all the rest by taking stills from the point the ball is played from 30 different cameras and creates a digital image with the offside blanket thingymajiggy coming down in the image and an alert saying ‘ONSIDE’ or ‘OFFSIDE’.

Now, that doesn’t mean the AI is correct. The PL+PIGMOL didn’t bring in semi-automated offside earlier like others leagues did because they found that there was a degree of error with it compared to them drawing the lines on themselves. Maybe that still exists with the new SA offside system.
