Just a quick warning that you might want to be aware of, yesterday got a text, saying Dad save my new number so text back which one are you. Reply came back Eldest and favourite which set off alarm bells as never had favourite all my kids and they know that. So rang her knew nothing about changing her phone so put it down to some random text to wrong number. The today got could you do me a favour please text, followed by could you help me pay a transfer which is due today and i'll pay you back tomorrow total is £1460 if that's ok. Reported to action fraud but it might be worth warning your parents especially if getting on. These fuckers are utter scum.

These have been doing the rounds for years along with emails about being stuck abroad
Someone I knew had their email hacked and an SOS was sent saying he was stuck in Italy and his credit cards had been stolen
I deleted it immediately knowing it was a scam and the next time I saw him he said he never knew how many friends he had because his phone never stopped ringing with people offering help

Don’t want to worry you but I hope you have antivirus enabled on whatever devices you use.
Clicking on any links, replying to texts etc allows hackers to install malware and before you know it, they’ve hacked everything you access.
Probably not happened in your case, but be aware.

Just ignore any messages from unknown numbers. If they are genuine, they’ll persist and use familiar language, or try a different form of communication.

The amount of text, phone calls and email scams is horrendous these days, I swear we will all wind back the clock and fuck digital off at some stage due to it all.

One way is to have a word or name that only family will know and understand.

Or ask a question that only a loved one would know the answer to.

The scammers will try anything. Done the right thing there to check, the mother in law has dementia and before we had power of attorney would be giving away money to anybody who called or text her. Am sure most people know but worth repeating in this day and age:

If you didn't enter a competition, you haven't won anything.
If something seems off, it probably is.
If you weren't expecting the text/email, ignore it. If it's important they'll try to contact you again.
If an unexpected caller rings, let it go to voicemail. If you pickup they know the number is active.
If you use contactless payments, use additional protection (ooh er missus) like fingerprint required to authorise payment.
Get a RFID card and place it in your wallet or purse next to your bank card. I've seen chancers at festivals often trying their luck to scan cards.
Consider a Faraday pouch for your car keys if keyless.

If you don't have an online ad blocker, get into the habit of checking 'reject all's or 'do not consent' options on websites. They're asking you to agree to them selling your data to whoever they like. Some make it incredibly awkward, listing each company individually, rather than a reject all button.

If websites make you do this, drop kick them into touch and get your news elsewhere. Same with the newer trend of accept all or pay a fee to view. Looking at you MEN. You can certainly instruct Google on Android phones, and probably most internet browsers, to not even show you pages from specific websites. Use it, and eventually they'll have to change their practices or die once they see the click through rate declining.
