Scariest away day following City

Birmingham away late 70s before segregation. Nightmare, we all stood in the middle of the Tilton Road end about 10mins before kick off the Birmingham fans rushed in from the back, chasing the City fans into the corner and into the stand, some got onto the pitch. Same happened the year after, got chased back to the coach park. When we played them in a night game, in the 90s they got on the pitch after the game, I got hit by a Milk crate queuing to get in!
A milk crate was queuing to get in?

All away games against the big clubs were dangerous during the mid 70s to late 80s, but for me the Swamp in 1974, was the worst by far. Segregation was installed, the scoreboard end was split into 4 sections to my recollection, City had the full end, the rags were determined to get in, and they did in huge numbers, they came on the pitch before the game during and at half time, most blues made a hasty retreat and left, we ended up in one of the outer sections, the two centre blocks were full of rags, When Law scored we turned and left, we new it would get worse. Everyone sees the pitch invasion at the end, believe me it was going on from the minute we got in the ground. If you watch the game when Law scores, you don't see any City fans, but that's where we were when we first went in. The next one for me was Forest away 74, cup game, there was segregation, not like the swamp, but again they climbed over the fence behind the goals, we were all forced up into a paddock, along side the pitch. The only good thing was we always tried to stick together, no egos, no drugs, if you were a blue, that was good enough.
The funny thing about the rags in those days, they all wore tartan, they looked like the bay city rollers, with tartan stitched on there cloths, something that all the girls did, so they did stand out like a bunch of xxxxx.

In was in the Scoreboard that day as a young kid. Didn't move when we scored and ended up in the pitch at the end for safety reasons.

OT was like a Bay City Rollers convention in those days. Daft reds always the last to catch on. Probably slightly before Leeds though!

I’m so glad I grew up in the 90’s and away from all of this crap. Imagine not being able to take your kids due to the violence every weekend? No wonder an entire generation grew up thinking football is a TV channel.

Quite sad to see one or two warmly reminiscing about it too. I literally can’t remember the last time I had to fight to escape a situation. Maybe 20 years ago.
The warm reminiscing may be sad to read but it doesn't alter the fact that, for many of us, it was just part and parcel of following football, nobody is saying it's right, it just happened and we were part of it therefore we warmly reminisce. There wasnt much that could touch the rush of adrenalin felt at away games, even if you weren't a thug you still needed to come up with an exit strategy from almost every ground we ever played at, that alone leaves you with a memory.
Just trying to offer some perspective to your point, I've seen you say similar before, they were different times, it's a shame you can't accept that we're not glorifying it, they are fond memories, nothing more.

FOCs reminiscing is all it is. Previous generations used to swap war stories, our generation swap football hooligan stories.

Had to be there to understand. Some of the best days of my life. Got two grown up lads who are season card holders and they go to the match and come home without any mither which I'm pleased about. Although they did have to have their wits about them for the semi against the red shit.

Was going to say same but I thought he'd just accuse us of pretending we were soldiers. Truth of it is they were great times, I made good friends, had some of the best times of my life, no regrets whatsoever.

Who was it who said-" Buzzin my tits off".
That's how I felt about going to away matches in the 70s and early 80s.

Yep, When Saturday Comes, it was the only thing worth going to work for, skint again by Sunday night but another memory made, sadly I've forgotten loads now, they all blend into one.
