Scariest away day following City

The legend was that The SAS used to take time off from training in the Black Mountains and descend on the occasional Hereford match, and would beat the crap out of anyone they didn’t like with impunity, getting away with it due to who they were.

I lived on Aconbury Avenue which was adjacent to the SAS camp. I knew numerous soldiers and they were the most disciplined men imaginable. Times must have changed because that didn’t happen when I was on the Meadow End. It’s a retirement city.

I’m youngish so don’t have any particular stories about violence at football, but I do remember my Dad coming home from Stoke in 98 black and blue. He and his mates thought it would be a good idea to go in the Stoke End. Heard plenty of stories about that day.

Remember when Johnny Muir's mother had the Wellington pub West Gorton early 70s,yes the one used in Shameless years later.John was behind the bar maybe Tommy was away army or navy.

was'nt it on the Chatsworth estate then ?

Did you go Sheff Utd away with London branch about 85? Train got in about 1pm and there were about 3 lads between 17 and 30. The rest seemed like families or older blokes. Soon as you come out of station there is a pub on corner with their lot watching whose arrived. Copper sent us down one road towards ground, whilst watching about 30 of them head off downthe road next to, it to cut us off. Almost as both roads meet we saw Sheff utd and everyone ran. We could then see the ground and there were some Blues in the distance. Me and another Blue slowed down and he turned and asked them to come on then. Some jumping about but they went back to the pub. Maybe it was cos we werent a crew, or cos it was now closer to the ground im not sure.

I travelled a bit with the London branch from
87-89. Remember going to Plymouth away thinking it was about an hour away and getting there 3.5 hrs later. 2 of the lads who usually travelled by train decided to drive that day and car broke down. We got there at half time when winning 2-0. We ended up losing 3-2! Used to take a fair few from London. I remember going with them to the already mentioned Everton League Cup QF around 87/88.

Ten of us got Stoke tickets but we were fine as we didn't go mad and got talking in the end. The coach park was stupid. Our mini bus was pelted as we were corralled in with a bloody building site next door.

There were house bricks raining down on us that day after the match.nowhere to go to avoid them.
Bedlam.

Think im confusing two diff away wins at Leeds....the Gerry Creaney 1nil..was that under Ball?
If so,Richard Edghill played a blinder at left back..
I also remember being there under Keegan i think and winning 1nil with Paulo Wanchope being absolutely brilliant/virtually unplayable..that was def a night match...Wanchope scoring the only goal.
It was first away match when Gerry Creaney scored with Dane Bank blues. Remember it was really foggy. It was deffo on a Saturday . After the game I turned right instead of Left for the Coach park. I walked into a pack of Leeds just hitting out at any blues walking in there way. S**t myself I wont lie as it was my first away game

I got an old school hooligan site come up on my facebook so joined it.You can tell some of the guys posting have been very active in the past.Lots of different clubs.

They have a similar thread on there and the amount who say Maine Road was a nightmare shocked me.Never seemed that bad to me but the alleyways for away fans was I suppose.
