very good question....
if we won the cups/cup then it would be the monkey off our back

Or Cup (singular), if it was the FA.
The FA Cup is currently the most prestigeous competion we might have realistic designs on winning. Success breeds confidence and further success, and winning a major domestic trophy and qualifying for the Europa cup would have to be considered a good season. Champs league and 4th place won't make the record books, although in terms of attracting better players I can see its merits. But let's just win something and get that monkey off our backs first!
