And yet video replay wasn't available. How on earth should the onfield ref muster the audacity to completely disregard the replay booth when they had ample replays available to them.

I for one, absolutely agree that Otters hand ball is a penalty - on the basis that that's the way that the game is called - at the same time I absolutely agree that Otter's hand ball was not intentional.

The rules of the game need to be updated.

I’m not sure you necessarily understand the rules then, mate. Hand ball has to be deliberate for it to be considered an offence.

If you don’t think Otamendi was deliberately seeking an advantage by having his arm in the position it was in, then by the rules of the game, you don’t think it should be a pen.

Had the referee given the penalty of his own volition, it would have been bad, yes, but it would not have been quite so bad say as Dowd (Liverpool) or Clattenburg (Spurs). What's genuinely worrying, however, is that there is a room full of experts who can determine that the referee's original decision was clearly wrong. That I find deeply disconcerting.

Makes no difference whether he’s the captain or not. They have no more right to talk to the ref on behalf of their teammates than anyone else.
...according to what I vaguely remember from my 1980 Roy of the Rovers Annual’s ‘You’re the ref’ section.

Great comeback. A lot was stacked against us last night but the lads pulled through. Loved Zinchenkos reaction to Leroy’s free kick & from one camera angle it looked like Danilo was the first up in the bench celebrating Sterling’s winner. Says so much about our team spirit & togetherness. A small step closer to the quad.....Bring on Sunday

I actually believe VAR will be prove to be a benefit but serious wrinkles need to be ironed out. In particular we need clarity and CONSISTENCY on:

- The circumstances when it can be invoked: clear and obvious errors or marginal decisions?
- The sanction (if any) for players calling for VAR?
- Whose decision is final?

The Ota penalty was patently in the debatable rather than obvious category. Quite a few on here thought it was an offence under the rules. Lots thought it wasn’t. Anybody saying it was clear cut is romancing. Had the ref given it first time, it would have been easier to stomach than awarding it through an invalid procedure.

Will UEFA be big enough to admit that, in hindsight, it was invalid? Will they fcuk as like.
 
So just reading Mark Halsey’s view On the incident in the paper at work

He says no way was the handball deliberate and he would not have given it
 
How can it possibly be deliberate hand ball if hes moving his hand away. Incredible.

Almost as bad as that one a few years back, I forget his name but he hits a snapshot a few yards away from Micah Richards and it bounces up and hits his thigh then his arm. Pen given. I couldn't believe it.
