Sea swimming at Christmas why ?

One of the blokes who died in Devon swam in the sea nearly every day. Seems he was caught out by what another sea swimmer said was the roughest weather he had seen.

'Caught out' or just plain stupid ? People who live by the sea know the sea. They know the tides, the weather. I use to do alot of sea fishing and I would never have fished in a yellow weather warning.
It seems people who live by the sea are losing the respect you should give the sea.

Mixture of both I'd imagine. I lived by the sea for 20 years and we never went in if it was remotely rough. The boats only got launched on calmish days. Madness to do anything else.

I suspect the two that died thought...'well, it looks OK...".

Where else they going to wear the big silly ‘look at me’ coat with the leggings tucked into white socks!
C U Next TuesdayS, the lot of em.
Including the wife!
Apart from it’s also full of turds etc.

That's my, out on the pull, look, you cheeky ****.

Cold water swimming is really good for you, it clears your mind and invigorates you, it is amazing and you get to do it with a group of people you like

But, it is two or three mins only and you do not go further than the shallow waters, i don't understand why these guys swam out so far, that breaks all of the safety rules

Absolute tragedy and such a shame for the individuals and families involved.

Sadly people make misjudgements and nature can take the most experienced person by surprise.

Human nature to try things which push boundaries, test themselves, and embark on traditions a bit out of the ordinary. It’s called living.

Depressing reading this thread and the lack of empathy shown by many.

Nah, if somebody's daft enough to get in the water then they should be left to fend for themselves if it goes tits up. Volunteers should just give them a little wave as they go under.
How does the volunteer decide who needs saving ?
Perhaps the mountain rescue should climb 2,000 feet to the injured person.
If they are wearing proper gear they get saved, if they are in jeans and flip flops they are left there ?

......because they're all fucking mental. My sister does it with all her wierd mates in all their Dry Robe whatevers. I've seen them all standing on Whitesands beach in Pembrokeshire in a rugby like scrum, look at the waves, which are usually huge and reserved only for mad surfer dudes, and then go back to thier cars. My sister, bless her, at least gets wet, though god knows why. The women that do it in Pembrokeshire call themselves the Bluetits.

The properly done and official sea swims, sea wades more like, are watched over by the emergency services. I've done one myself. Made loads of cash for the RNLI. And it was very cold. Made up by whisky in the pub after.

But sadly now you get loads of twats/ influencers filming themselves climbing mountains/ swimming in the sea/ jumping off cliffs without proper clothing and/or assistance. I'd just leave them...if they die, they die.
or charge the twats a hefty call out.

I have empathy for the RNIL who gave up their Christmas day to search for these selfish people

There were pictures on TV of the waves, that day, and stupid fuckers endanger their own lives, and that of potential rescuers, for kicks.

These two people have left their wives as widows, and their children fatherless, on something nothing better than a bucket list stunt.

After seeing the conditions no sane person would go anywhere near the sea…….
Even boat people never bothered trying, tells you how bad it was

I know we all complain about over zealous health and safety, but as MSC said on page 1 of the thread, let Darwin take effect.

I know it won't happen, but there should be a HUGE sign on that beach next December.....anybody here wanting to swim on Christmas Day, take your armbands and a Donald Duck rubber ring, because the RNLI will be tucking into their Christmas meals
