Sea swimming at Christmas why ?

Stop being busy cunts and let folk do what they want.
That's all fine and well, and I've no problem with it, UNTIL some poor bastard has to put their life at risk rescuing them, or worse loses their life doing so.

This swim apparantly, wasn't an organised one, so there was nobody to officially cancel it (many others were officially cancelled in the region), but a yellow weather warning was issued for the strength of the wind, and the likely sea conditions, and this was issued because it was an unusual set of circumstances.

Normally in that part of the world, if there were strong winds they would be from the southwest, therefore blowing onto the shore, but these winds were blowing the other way, so anyone caught out was likely to be blown out to sea.

I'm up in Scotland at the moment (like we do for most New Years) and we'll be down the beach at Garlieston watching all the women (and a few men) getting in there for a New Year's dip.
Good fun and plenty of warm drinks waiting for everyone as soon as they're out.

I'm not an open water swimmer myself, preferring indoor and outdoor pools with lifeguard presence.
I occasionally go for sea swims, but it's always in summer and never when the sea is rough or the tide is going out.
In terms of recent events, I agree that it's daft and selfish going for unorganised swims in unsuitable sea conditions, and putting RNLI volunteers under unnecessary risk.
I did 125 lengths outside today - magic!

My son goes to his in-laws every NY for a fancy dress night out in St. Ives followed by a cold dip on NYD. Fucking madness, in fact just going in the sea around the UK is shite and generally unsafe with waste and the weather.

I live by the coast and in the last 3 1/2 years that I've lived here I've 'paddled' once and walked with the RNLI between tides to an old lighthouse or what was left of it for charity.

Just like any other day of the year you have to assess the conditions. Some do it most days but read it wrong and you're fucked. I was at the beach on the 1st but it was way too cold for me to even consider a swim. A couple of older women went in, it was calm and they were fine. Some do it as tradition but if the weather isn't good it's best not to do it just for tradition or it might be the last thing you do...as some have found out over the last few weeks.

Seems the weather conditions were bad yet they decided to risk their lives. In doing so put the RNLI at unnecessary risk.
Living by the coast I dont understand why people dont respect the sea. The sea will kill you even in the warm summer months.
I know a few RNLI members they think its mad to enter a rough cold sea, yet without thinking they leave they families and risk their lives. Very brave people looking for stupid people.

If rescued, these people need criminal proceeding brought against them, at minimal heavy fines.

Talking to the few RNLI members I know.

I was moaning about the two people I saved from drowning aback in February 25 that I didnt get a 'thank you' from them.
The RNLI members says is rare too get a thank you let allowed a visit to the boathouse afterwards.

Bloody hell if the RNLI saved my life I would be round with as much cake and drink as they could cope with, along with a big donation.
