Season Summary - 2024/25

A huge disappointment after recent seasons.

Some dire, boring performances too with slow, sideways passing and about as much energy as you’d see in an over 80’s bowls tournament. Lots of poor transfer windows came home to roost.

Shit performance in the cup final. That’s two in a row now against blatantly inferior teams. Embarrassing.

Grateful to finish third in the end, which after recent seasons says it all.

Learn from our mistakes, sign better players, move on the old guard and the likes of Lewis and McAtee, and go again next season. Have to be right back to our best, can’t have the scouse wankers strolling it again.

2/10 overall for the season, not just results but the standard of football.

It's a good point that the PL was very weak this season. Liverpool won the league with 84 points when City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Utd, Spurs, Newcastle were all weak. That Forest and Villa were competing for CL qualification says it all.

But that will also help City to recover next season.
I think if Liverpool had wanted it, they could easily have got to 90. That’s the target we need to be aiming for every season now. We fell way short of that.

Rodri back will help but I have some big concerns about Doku/Savinho and also Foden.

If those 3 don’t get better and back to their best in Foden’s case then I can see another year of hit and miss performances and results.

3/4 signings will hopefully help.

Need the 115 thing sorting too now before the season. It’s gone on way too long.

Sub standard performance across all areas of the club apart from PL2 and the away support - At Spes Infracta

We know we can do a lot better but we managed to show signs of recovery and both liverpool's and Arsenal's points and goal difference isn't surrmountable and we can count ourselves unfortunate that we didn't add the FA Cup.

This season felt like the crash after a week long bender. It was like the hangover had to start at some point and it was this season. I'm a huge Pep fan and was pretty disgusted with a minority of our fans attitudes towards him this season. As if we are entitled to huge success every year. I guess this is exasperated by the cost of football these days and expectations after what he has achieved, and the bar he has set. We have been hampered by injuries, players aging out, signings that haven't matched the level of the past, and possibly a lack of hunger in some areas. I'm looking forward to the rebuild, which may take a season or two, and hopefully being cleared of the 130 charges against us.

Rodri did himself a mischief. We missed him. We didn’t get the best out of the big Norwegian one for some reason or another. We missed him.

Missing the football already. The sooner we take our title back of the ferals the better Obviously disappointed, but one season of not sweeping all before us,will just galvanise us ,plus being completely exonerated ,will set us up nicely for next season.
When are the fixtures out!?

FUCK.IN.HELL!!! 2/10 for 3rd in league, top of the league in the form table 2nd half of the season, FA cup final - all with all our best players (except Gvardiol) out long term for most of the season. A manager having a personal breakdown but still dragged us through the season. I wish some of our fan base would just fuck off. Fucking sick of them

After recent seasons and the expectation that goes with that, coupled with the boring as fuck sideways passing and losing another fa cup final that was a 2/10 yes.

I genuinely couldn’t give a fucking shit about your opinion.

Considering the Rodri, Ake, Bobb, Stones, Ankanji and Haaland injuries, the departure of Alvarez without a chance to replace pre-season, plus Walker’s loss of speed and departure in January, we did well to finish 3rd. It was the October-December period that was so depressing, but lots of signs we are getting back to ourselves. A squad refresh started in January, Marmoush a big plus, O’Reilly too, and Gonzales is beginning to show his potential. A good start, terrible middle but promising end, except for the Cup Final.

A Disaster? No
But Frustrating imo
Injuries Etc Poor Performances too
However it happens
We will be back
You'll see

Good to finish 3rd after what has felt like a down year. I think this is a very important moment and it will be really interesting seeing who leaves alongside Kev & Walker, then more importantly who arrives.

Looking at the final stats (which I wish the club webpage would include) it is clear that this season we only have 1 player in the list of top PL scorers (Erling) and 1 in the assists (Kev with 7!) where the issue is. Hopefully next year Omar an be up there. But, for me we have had a real lack of goals and assists from our wingers. I really think we may see Savinho or Doku moved on especially if we are looking at Rodrygo cause we cannot rely on Erling to be our only scoring threat and without the assist king someone has to step up - or we change the way we utilise wide players and overlapping fullbacks.

Overall though we can now attract players who want CL. I hope we get the business done early.
Not sure we could've caught LP but if we don't have that horrendous injury stretch, including our best player for the entire season, we easily finish second and probably cause LP a ton of stress and we chased them.

All said and done, we have done well to recover the season after a disastrous winter.
Whatever could have gone wrong this season, did so.
It was crucial that we got into the UCL to give us the best chance of rebuilding this squad.

It's been a long season for certain and one which has highlighted a lot of big questions which needs answering over summer. However the CWC is almost likely to mean we won't have much time.

Firstly losing Rodri was horrendous. He is the best player in the world, but we have had all season to find an answer and we still don't have one. Without Rodri we won't win much, simple as that. Pep has a team system which is hugely dependent on one player - he needs to sort this out. Rodri might not be the player he was after that injury so we absolutely need someone who can play in his position, simple as that.

Secondl is the Haaland Question. He is the best striker in the world but it's not working for him in our team. For too many games he is anonymous and is starting to make the wrong runs or just hide next to defenders. We look better as a team when he doesn't play and unless he scores it's like playing with 10 players. Pep needs to think about this - how can we get Haaland into games? I'm coming to the conclusion he's the best striker in the world but in the wrong team.

Peps style of football has been found out. Too many teams have been able to sit back and counter on "1 shot, 1goal" - eg Palace in the final and practically every team in the CL. Possession is becoming about control in areas that don't matter. He needs to take more risks and learn from managers like Klopp who had less possession but used it more effectively.

Pace and athleticism is also becoming a key area for other teams but our midfield is painfully slow and too old. We need players who can move quickly. I've been surprised how a total lack of pace in KdB, Gundogan, Silva and even Dias and Nico hasn't been noticed by Pep. It's allowed any player with a modicum of pace to slice through or midfield. It's mad to say this but pretty much any generic quick midfielder in the league would improve ours!

Overrall we might have finished 3rd but it feels like a lucky 3rd. Losing to Palace summed up our season really - loads of boring possession but no idea how to score.

We need some big changes over summer. The board needs to ask Pep some hard questions too - does he have the energy and ideas of a few tears ago? Can he stop "1 shot, 1 goal"? Where has the teams energy gone and can he get it back? How can a team drop off so much in just a few months? Will we continue the same style that's not done much in the PL and bombed out in the CL?

Finally the 115 charges continue to hang over the club. We need answers on this either way as it's hard to see how we can plan with it.

We have to sign some top class players this summer. No more Nunes/Grealish/ones for the future etc. We need at least one world class midfielder, 2 full backs and a goalkeeper who can stop shots. We also need some pace. Without these I don't see us finishing top 4 next year if I'm honest.

Once the new season starts I'm sure I will be predicting a clean sweep again though! :)
Excellent summary!
