Seat Counters 25/26

is the 35k that was quoted here a few days ago the correct attendance from Wednesday night?

Saw someone saying there were far more they thought.

Any records online of a higher attendance figure?
Need it for a Watsapp argument ASAP

I don’t know mate. We probably lost £1mil in revenue vs the ground being virtually full. We probably made £15mil progressing to the next round of the Champs League.

Yes there’s a lot more to it than money but I can’t see the board panicking like some posters have suggested.

In my opinion, that Leverkusen game has come back to bite the club on the arse in more ways than one. The crowd that night was 50,500 with probably no more than 2,000 Bayer fans.
This was 25th Nov on a dank and cold night. Pep fielded a reserve eleven and if BM is anything to go by, a lot of folks were fuming and basically said fuck midweek games. Now I’m not saying it’s only down to that but you can only piss people off so many times, especially folk who have a long journey, need to take time off work etc etc.
I think there's a few reasons for the reduced attendances, but the one you've mentioned is definitely a factor.

And that’s the irony. The team go deep into the 4 comps almost every year unlike the other 19 clubs. More success means more games and more expense than other fans. You are right that we are spoilt and asking 50000 fans to shell out for more and more games is not going to happen and we don’t have the Norwegian or Irish fan base of others to take up the slack.
When we play Brighton at home in a Tuesday night in January that new extension will be sit in any seat and a total embarrassment.
Hopefully the 35k CL figure this week will give the Board a kick up the arse to do something about this.
A great point made above.
All City's rivals have nowhere near the level of achievement in the last 15 years, regularly reaching semi-finals of ALL competitions - as a minimum.
The Trafford Tramps will play 20 games, yes 20 games at their shit-tip of a ground, this season.
Am sure some clever seat-counter will work out how many home games City could have this season ?
I would wager it will be nearly 30...

Regarding the 35k crowd this week, change a detail or two and it’s understandable. If we were playing Millwall at home in an evening cup game and there were reports that 1,000 plus Millwall fans had bought tickets in the home end, I would expect thousands of Blue no shows. Gala have that sort of rep even though the game passed off largely peacefully. Man U fans were terrified last season.

Midweek games in the middle of winter anren’t easy for a lot of our fans. Up until this week most Blues have struggled to get to and home from the game. That said, the bubble may have burst now and only the very biggest of games will sell out in midweek for the foreseeable future.

We’ve no idea whether the expanded stand will be empty for midweek Prem games against lower profile teams. I think the top of the East and West stands will have empties and so will the South Stand, if last night is anything to go by.

You want action from the Board and fair enough. Will you be doing anything to help fill the seats like run a coach to games, encourage family members to attend etc.
I was agreeing with you Tim. To your last point the answer is no. That’s the Boards job. They set the strategy and if having a half empty stadium at higher prices brings in more match day revenue than selling cheap seats to get more customers in is their strategy then that’s their perogative. I have encouraged family members and friends to attend by the way. All of whom are long standing season ticket holders.

Not sure that’s true, a lot of people probably thought we’d be through already and that the Gala game would be a dead rubber. Especially relevant given it was at the end of the longest payday month and you’d typically buy tickets around Christmas time. Really think it was timing, next game will be packed out

Spot on mate. The strategy from the Board could encourage better engagement with fans and better ideas for growing our supporter base. Good on your family for all being Blues.

Even basic stuff like several of us have mentioned a number of times like bringing back the Junior Blues could be a starting point. I also think juniors who have a paid membership could be able to renew for free (and maybe not get the box of perks).

don't forget a certain former director at city whos now down the road preferred no fans in the ground as they got more money etc from sponsors and less fan demand.

We're @ 28 with the Round of 16 Chimps league. So could be 30 (Fingers Crossed!).
Oh and I don't count seats just matches! ;-)

Yes I agree that there should be some better initiatives along the lines you have suggested to future proof our fan base.
This is an honest question by the way and not a pisstake but what is the actual point of the £35 membership fee? Is it to provide customers with the ‘privilege’ of joining an exclusive club due to tickets being in such high demand?
If someone could let me know the rational then it would be appreciated!

I think the Directors see the match day membership fee / £35 as a revenue growth opportunity where we lag behind the rags and bin dippers and other top Prem Clubs. I have heard Roel de Vries and Danny Wilson talk about trying to get closer to the rags and Dippers on membership numbers too.

I know even Leeds have had a £50 and a £75 match membership.

Millwall??? Fucking hell they don’t take more than 1k anywhere nowadays…. Plus funny fans still think Millwall are something scary.

Nobody is what they used to be in England. I was giving an example to help to explain the poor attendance. It was a different era back then but some European clubs still carry big numbers. That said, Gala and Rangers having thousands in the home stands at the swamp last season was extraordinary.

I think Millwall could manage to take a thousand if they were in the Champs League lol

I get what you’re saying about poor attendance but don’t think most City fans were put off because of galatasary’s reputation’.. there’s over 10k tickets left for Newcastle so would that be that City fans are worried about geordies all over ground? I just think it’s down to money and priorities and most peoples payday today so can see ticket sales picking up for Wednesday. I’ve been wanting millwall to come up for years to see what numbers they would take away…

City have got to the last 16 of the CL, and to the semi-final of the Carbo cup. There’s a strong possibility the combined gates will be 25,000-30,000 under capacity, give or take. That’s something that will be noted and probably discussed by the directors.

Don’t forget, Gala pretty much sold out their 3000 ticket allocation, and they had 100’s of fans in the home ends. Newcastle have sold out their 5000+ ticket allocation. That’s an extra 9000 fans added to the combined attendances, give or take, by the away fans.

If club directors aren’t concerned by those figures and the continual fan drop off, something is very wrong at boardroom level.

How are we going to get close to those 2 clubs, which City won’t anyway, if fans are walking away, being banned, etc?

It’s like 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

Never mind City Bingo, it’s now City Snakes and Ladders.

Nobody was put off by Galatasaray's reputation. It was more the hassle for casual supporters of trying to buy a ticket and then the self perpetuating myth that it was going to be chaos

The issue for Newcastle fundamentally is price!

It’s £30-£50 tickets. That’s crazy for a cup game (we have never really smashed attendances for EFL cup semis - even going back to playing Liverpool over a decade ago).

If tickets ranged from £20-£40 instead it would probably add another 10k-15k to the attendance.

They could still do something about this. But they won't.
