The club needs to grasp a proper understanding of its fanbase demographic, by employing an independent Market Research agency to organise professional questionnaires and focus groups amongst seasoncard holders, members and occasional supporters of all ages and genders.
The average attendance was much lower in the mid 80s, but in essence, nothing had really changed since the George Poyser days with so much potential for growth if everything fell into place.
We might have only averaged around 20,000, but literally everyone was a diehard
The average has since more than doubled but my suspicion is that the club has tried to run before it can walk, and we've now got so many new supporters who are more interested in having a pre match burger (whist listening to music and celebrity City supporters being interviewed on City Square) than attending a midweek match
What's more, I don't think they would even attend an evening match in the winter months if it was free.
Unfortunately this has been compounded by those diehards from the mid 80s Mel Machin era now approaching/reaching their 60s, and not fancying midweek matches anymore, but for completely different reasons.
This is why the club needs to act now and make sure that it's not trying to solve the wrong problem whilst establishing and finding solutions to the real issues.
