Self-employed & Coronavirus

As I see it, some people will slip the safety net completely or largely, e.g.

- Director of own company on PAYE (probably unable to furlough and no income tax to defer)
- Below VAT threshold and not registered (no VAT to defer), and
- Operating from home (no business rate relief, no grant)
- No mortgage (so no deferral)

I stand to be corrected though.

It's still a slightly grey area tbh. As above, you're not allowed to do any work at all if you want to be eligible for the scheme.

Thinking about it, you may be able to furlough one of you. That could work. I'll do some digging in this.

Would they not have to resign from their owner/director role as I don't think they can just be furloughed. Even if the company isn't operating you still have some responsibilities which in effect means you are in work?

I am mate and I'm not working. No idea when I'll be going back either. What's all this 2k you speak of? So far, I'm not aware of construction workers getting anything other than the shaft.
If I'm entitled to anything I'll give it a shot.

Anyone self employed losing work will be entitled to 500 bucks a week. You can apply for it April 7th and can be done through all the CRA stuff. It includes basically anyone who's out of work

I'm self employed, as well as doing me regular job so im hoping to jump on it too, if not gonna try pick up more security gigs

Cheers. Better than a kick in the balls. It's just less than two days pay per week but it'll pay for my truck and keep me going. How many bloody jobs do you have? : )

The 80% in question is the Job Retention Scheme in which furloughed employees will get that much of their salary (ie, those on PAYE) and now, the self-employed based on previous SA tax returns, paid by the Government.

It's totally separate to the VAT stuff :)

It is not the employees, it is employers. The employers get the 80% from the government, not the employees. So many people seem to be confused about this.

An employee has absolutely zero say in it, if struggling, they can't apply for this. The employer can still choose to cut their hours and pay to whatever level they see fit, to give them a pay cut, to make them redundant. Or they can send them home with 80%, and claim that 80% back. But there is nothing to compel them to do so, and in many cases redundancy will turn out less of a risk, and that'l be that.

Reading these pages, it is clear so many self enoloyed people will not get the help and security they deserve. But it isn't as simple for the PAYE either, altho it is more clean cut.
Ultimately, as great as both pledges sound, in practice, they will cover some, and some will suffer. I still think the effort is admirable, but it isnt as simple as it has been portrayed.

Is there any information on this in the public domain?
