Selling Javi Garcia was a mistake ?

I think you do have a point OP in the sense that we lack a bit of balance in the squad in the central midfield area, however it is still an improvement on last season.

It was clear to me from September onwards that Fernandinho was not suited to play in a two with Yaya and letting Barry go on loan was a mistake. Not a criticism of Fernandinho he is just suited to a different role.

Fortunately Pellergrini noted this and chased Reges in January and played Garcia at the back end of last season when we needed a more solid platform to work from. It is no conicidence that previously Yaya has played alongside a De Jong or Barry because we need that discipline as Yayas strength is getting forward, dictating play and scoring goals. Getting back in position and the breaking up of play isnt.

It could also be argued Milner could play the attacking midfield role providing a choice of four but as you say only one defensive midfielder. Hopefully if he does get injured it wont be around champs lge time or when we have tough games such as the ones coming up like Arsenal and Chelsea as it may force Pellegrinis hand in the system he wishes to play.

So ... we sold Javi Garcia and replaced him with Lampard, a 36 year old attacking midfielder.

Now we have just one defensive midfielder in Fernando Reges.. and he got injured .. I don't think he'll be out for long .. but what if he does suffer a long term injury .. how will we cope without him ?
you're not taking account of us signing Schneiderlin tomorrow

We were restricted in what we could have personnel wise in both numbers and positions for assault's in Europe and on the domestic front so Garcia became the person surplus to the restrictions we were under.

He was also the player with the most currency that could continue to play with a club qualified for Chumps League.

It was a good deal for both parties although I suspect Garcia will leave Zenit before his contract runs out.

If he wanted to stay and we could accommodate him at the expense of someone else and the question remains who then although his opportunities would be fairly limited injury to others notwithstanding then we would have.

These issues almost always arise after a loss and a loss we normally wouldn't expect but these happen and they will happen to all the sides considered in the running for the title this year.

If we can beat Arsenal and Chelsea it would be considered a fairly reasonable start and while talk of Garcia will soon fade to grey its pure speculation as to whether he would have much of difference to yesterday's outcome.

These decisions as to who to let go and who to bring in are ongoing all the time and some we will regret bringing in and some we will regret letting go.

Understatement of the year. 1 point from 6 last season! I will be doing cartwheels if we win both of those games.

Lanpard was never a replacement and was ever only going to be a backup until the MLS season started. The comments we get on here after one defeat are incredible.

What the fuck am I reading?? Play MDM, Zabba, Kompany there? Squad unbalanced? Should have kept Garcia?

We replaced a pretty shit player with Fernando who in my opinion already looks miles better. We had the strongest squad ever last week, now after 1 defeat we are looking weak and unbalanced.

Mental this place.....

Now I was a Garcia fan but this thread is a joke. Fernando is better AND we currently have in order:
Fernando, Fernandinho, YaYa, Milner, MDM,
Garcia, Fernandinho and Milner were unfit for the Chelsea League game leaving just MDM.
Hell we can even play Zaba their now as we have Sagna at right back.
More options. Better options.
- When they can be arsed of course.

If it makes the Op feel any better, it looks like he's having a great time for Zenit. Scored the winner again Lokomotiv today.

Javi Garcia is shit at our level. Russian league is probably the right level for him. He didn't fit City football philosophy either (whole CFG plays same way, youth etc.), not even close to be mobile enough to make it at the very top.

Looks like he is succeeding at Zenit in Russian league, great for him. Getting nice wedge too and CL football every year.

I have the same concern. God help the team if it suffers injurys and the club have no choice but to play Lampard.

Garcia would still be turning round to run towards the goal now if he was playing yesterday. Good bit of business selling him this summer.

An improvement , but the imbalance is there and it might cost us.
