I am sure that if you win the trophy, you get the right to defend it. Therefore if Liverpool finish 6th, and win the Europa cup they will have the chance to defend it.
I've run the scenario results through my head, and can only think of 3 results:
1. Reading win this tie, so it becomes irrelevant
2. United beat City, extra time late winner
3. We actually beat United, but lose to Stoke in the final with a Rory Delap throw bouncing off the back of Richards' head.
which is more likely?
