Serge Gnabry

Where have all the “give our Academy players a chance” posters gone?

Plenty of us have been dying to see another Foden come through. Since the Stockport Iniesta arrived we haven’t had anyone near his standard…until now.

Cole Palmer has the skills and determination to succeed and he is nerveless. I don’t doubt him for a second and Pep thinks he is ready.

Sterling is about to leave the club and there are reports that Mahrez will share time with Palmer on the right wing as his replacement.

Instead of looking forward to one of our own stepping up it seems we now want Pep to sign a new player instead!? He can’t win!

We can‘t have it both ways. I accept Palmer might be the only one (maybe McAtee) and that we will have to replace anyone else that leaves after Sterling but I want to hear from the Academy supporters on this…is this not what we have wanted for years?

I’ve posted this in two different threads as it fitted both apologies.

I would delighted to see Palmer and McAtee get their chances next season. The only issue I have is that City briefed that Palmer was promoted to replace Torres so no need to replace Torres. Jesus left and City say that between Alvarez and Palmer we have cover. Now Sterling looks like he’s off but, according to the Athletic, Palmer and McAtee will be enough to cover.

I rate both players but it’s awful lot to ask both to be able to cover Jesus and Sterling who contributed a lot over the past few seasons. From the little I’ve seen neither has the pace of Sterling or even Jesus. It’s worth stating that between the two from the academy they have 1 league start.

We are going to face a very unusual, very demanding season and it’s more likely than not to put a huge strain on our squad. We have added real quality and upgraded in a few positions but we could end up with a higher quality but smaller squad, low on depth. That could lead to trouble when the last season crunch games come around.

Bringing academy players through should be a want and not a need.

If we have to rely on Palmer to fill the RW spot even if he's not elite level yet, then we've made a mistake somewhere. Like I said, I think a lot rests on how much we feel Foden can play RW. If he can, we're good. If not, we should buy.

If Pep thinks Palmer is ready to play on the right or elsewhere (I know there are no direct quotes) why are we worried? He will always have one league start if he never gets a chance. His chance is now.

Im really pleased we have another ready to go.

Barca tried to force their academy players in and after some years they realized just how fucked they were, Wenger got caught up in the "La Masia" hyped and copied that template and it turned out to be a total shit show! Let's not prematurely hype up the likes of Palmer, instead give him time to prove himself while learning from the established top players ahead of him.

Knocking down the abilities of Sterling, Mahrez,Jesus and even players who aren't in the team ( Neymar, Gnabry) just to big up an unproven academy player is just plain silly and delusional, and not just any kind of delusion, I am talking "Jordan Ibe is better than Sterling" dipper type of delusion.

Yeah, I know every fanbase over-hypes their own young prospects and I do rate Palmer, but anyone who thinks he's just going to stroll into a side that fights on the highest elite level on all fronts and replace the likes of Sterling and Jesus is in for a bit of a rude awakening, I feel. Let him bed closer into the first team without the world on his shoulders.

If he's good enough, he'll prove it even with competition.

If not, then we did the right thing in buying a Sterling replacement.

I think we have just about enough if Foden can play there, but if not, I think we need to buy.

Not seen a single link to anyone, though, so I feel like the club trust Foden/Palmer/Bernie to rotate with Riyad there.
