Serie A - 2021/22

What a tremendous finish. So many chances at both ends, and I was sure the referee was going to be asked to look at Genoa’s penalty again. Napoli away and Bologna at home to come, but I can’t help feel Criscito’s miss last week will prove costly.

Salernitana had a fantastic opportunity today to complete their miracle escape. Seems as if some teams are intent on taking it down to the wire.

The goal just scored by Theo Hernandez is a masterpiece

The season ends this weekend with the title still up for grabs and a relegation spot still unsettled; those games are on Sunday afternoon and then Sunday evening. Think AC Milan will get the point they need at Sassuolo, but I'm less sure about Cagliari being able to leapfrog Salernitana.

Still find the situation with Genoa bizarre. They could yet defeat Bologna and get to 31 points, level with Salernitana, against whom they have a better goal difference. However, Serie A uses the head-to-head rule, so because they lost in Salerno and only drew in Genoa, they are already relegated.

The modern ‘seven sisters’ will all be back playing European football next season. Fiorentina are back in but Atalanta miss out.

Salernitana miraculously stay in the top flight despite crashing 0 v 4 at home to Udinese. Cagliari’s inability to win sees the Sardinians drop into Serie B with Venezia and Genoa. Don’t often see such celebrations after such a heavy defeat, but that is some escape.
