I think he wants to control the midfield without giving up on a defender, which is exactly what the 3-5-2 does, in addition to allowing him two strong outlets to play between their defenders. A flat back four leaves us exposed if and when the FBs attack and that can't happen in the CL.

Danilo is not a left back, always goes to his right foot.

From what I've heard and seen, Danilo is equally adept at left back, right back and midfield. That's why Pep signed him.
