Shane McGowan RIP (P8)

RIP Shane - a true modern day poet for the masses.

He was about as Irish as Rod Stewart is Scottish - never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Well, he did spend a few years.of his childhood in Ireland from the age of 3-6 I believe. But he was born in Kent and spent most of it in England. His family must have had some dough too, he was privately educated at a school called Holmewood House and also they lived in the Barbican Estate which was flats for pretty affluent city workers, not that it matters but its all quite at odds with the image people had of him. But it also should be said that his Irish family were living in England in the 60s and 70s and back the Irish very much had strong community, as relations between the British and Irish then meant there wasn't the same kind of relaxed integration as now. So he was probably raised around mostly the Irish people, even though they were in London. Then again, you see him wearing union Jack jackets during the punk scene.

He was definitely a mixed bag!

Watch “Crock of Gold” currently on BBC iPlayer which describes itself as the definitive story of Shane’s life. 2 hours long with contributors/interviewers ranging from Gerry Adams to Johnny Depp. Brilliant watch. His family had him drinking as a small child - fucking child abuse really. A funny and sad programme.

He certainly was.

Me and Rascal got to see them live in London around Paddy’s day with Kirsty McColl and Joe Strummer and got to meet them after as we blagged our way onto the guest list.

What a gig.

That was the Saturday , Rascal can tell us about his Thursday concert in Leeds.
