I suspect what we are seeing now in terms of their transfer MO (or lack of it) is why he decided to exit the stage when he did.
I think he's done and he'll fade a little into the background, if anything.
In my opinion his leaving was because he knew what was coming regards transfers, ie very little, and he knew the trouble that united were in. He sought assurances from the glazers, and they didn't come, so he bolted. He'll not be back.
The article is perhaps a bit ott, but united's transfer policy thise season has a similar whiff about it to that of Spurs 4 or 5 years ago when they were trying to catch their local rivals, where they promised much, shouting from the rooftops, but delivered little or nothing.
