Shay Given

Apologies for dragging up an old thread but I don't have enough posts to start a new topic, but I thought this deserved to be posted and couldn't find it anywhere else.

Shay Given: I've got Euro 2012 to look forward to, but I have to be there for Speedo's family...

It is a short sentence but it comes with a long, sad sigh. 'You've got to keep living,' says Shay Given.

Often quotations look different when transferred to black and white and for the past month since the death of his great friend Gary Speed, Given has wrestled with words, what to say, how to say it and whether to speak at all. But he has witnessed the power of them, too.

A bit long, but worth a read.

Given is a class act all round,I don't know many established pro's who would have taken a year on the bench with us the way he did.I think Hart is the better keeper but I love Shay and am proud to have him as my countries no1.

Shay is the best shot stopper in the world and a better keeper than Joe!However youth is on Joes side and he should surpass Shay!

Is he fuck a better keeper than Joe....take your green bins off.

Ya, because what you both are arguing isn't exactly relevant to the post. It doesn't really matter who's better does it?
Hart's ours and Given's at Villa, he gave a pretty emotional interview post Speed's death, that was why a posted it, not for people to get back into an endless Given v Hart fight that seems to have lasted 4 pages so far.

I love Shay, i think he's possibly the best keeper in the Premier League, our Joe will be better given time though. I agree that he should come off his line more but he's not the biggest of keepers so that does work against him when coming for corners and crosses when against taller players, his communication with defenders is the best i've seen from a keeper he literally screams at his defenders until they do as he says . He's excellent!

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I'm not too fussed!

Having just seen Newcastle's goal against Villa today, I fail to see why Given remained rooted to his line and didn't simply come and punch the cross away. I believe he made lots of great saves to keep Villa in it but it doesn't mask that they probably could have won it id he'd have come for that ball.

This is why I am happier with Joe and why I'm happy with Mancini's decision.

when at newcastle i thought awesome keeper, i was wrong. Awesome shot stopper, that is all never, leaves the line thats his biggest fault. doesnt even compare to joe hart

-- Tue Jan 03, 2012 11:21 pm --

No, Hart's the same weaknesses as Given, but Given is a better shot stopper, he controls the defense better and he's a better level of concentration.

Just because he's taller doesn't make Hart better.
If Given was the better keeper he'd still be in goal for City.

No if Given was a 24 year old English keeper he'd still be in goals for City.

Given for me is the better keeper, but Hart is a better investment. Hart's great and all but I thank God we didn't sell Given to the Rags or Arsenal because he's been outstanding for Villa so far this season, and he'd be the difference between winning and loosing the title. We would not be worse off at all if he was still our no.1.
we certainly would without doubt.
