Sheffield Wednesday - 6 more points deducted! (P37)

Once again gave it a decent go against a team that I thought would win the league.

4 of ours subs that came on were 20 or under, they bring on players with a transfer value of about £25m

2 more players went off injured which could be terrible if they miss the Xmas program.

People can have a pop at Ashley for the above, but the Geordies were financially viable, if I was a Wednesday fan I would sleep well knowing the club was going to be run on a sound footing rather than some anonymous overseas group come in and buy the club, with no football brain and make another mess of the club.
When Ashley took us over we were regularly in the top 20 most valued football clubs in the world. Only members of the then top 4 clubs finished above us in England in income, even then we were often above some of them.

When Ashley bought us we had a loan for our stadium expansion tied to season ticket sales. So we pretty much couldn’t go bust. The loan like similar loans in protestations had a clause in it that stated in the event of change of ownership, the loan is to be paid immediatly. Thi is to prevent leveraged buyout which result in business’s going into administration and avoiding paying the whole balance or most of the balance through a restructuring process of administration.
Anyway Ashley famously never did his due diligence buying us, so never knew about the loan having to be called in until he got the bill. This is where the myth of using being insolvent comes from.

By the time he sold us, our commercial revenue dropped in real terms. He had nearly exclusive advertising of SJP, of which he only paid 1 years worth towards, and that was for the year when the buyers were looking at the books. He failed to pay the next season, which allowed our owners to take down his advertising.
Our shirt deal with Castore, which he is alleged to be the secret financial backer of was less than what we now get for our shirt sleeve sponsorship.

Our training ground went from being state of the art when he arrived, to being way behind a lot of Championship clubs. The stadium had no real maintenance done to it. The pest control devices which are a legal requirement for stadium had the logos of a company that went bust a decade earlier and clearly had not been checked on. We had a dead pigeon stuck in the roof netting of the Gallowgate stand for years.
Our supporters cheered when the new owners washed the windows of SJP a week into their ownership.

We went from having one of the best commercial departments in Europe, to still being behind Spurs in terms of revenue with PSR rules making it difficult to close the gap.
Our club shop was effectively an SD outlet, and then a Castore one. The club received pennies to the pound of income from their own sales.

Happier times at Hillsborough!!
1st day of the season home to Forest,Owls back in the top league, the ground is bouncing ,packed to the rafters ,apart from the away end which is only half full, poor turn out from UReds when the distance is 30 miles up the M1...the miners strike dispute at the time may have made this match less attractive for visiting fans.......who 5 years later managed to bring 20k for the infamous tragic fa cup semi final...

Here in this match you can see the leppings lane terrace is packed in only one of the two central pens behind the goal,a clear police/steward policy to, I suspect lower the costs for managing the away support ,direct them to the central pens...
The ground didn't have a safety certificate at this time iirc....

The team line ups are pretty uninspiring.

Most skilful players on view are Johnny Metgod for forest operating stylishly ,at deep centre midfield, and prob Brian Marwood for Wed,which isn't saying much really ..

Isn Bowyer starts at left back for Forest..towards the end of his career and just B4 Stuart Pearce days....Bowyer apparently scored two goals for City back in March 1970 at Hillsborough which sent Wed down, a relegation which lead to 14 years in the lower leagues, culminating in a near drop to the 4th division(2976),dark days indeed....

However, the huge roar from the home crowd ,full of expectation and 1st day hope ...is a reminder of the ebbs and flows of supporting any team....
The home kop is absolutely bouncing...how football used to be.

4 players with City connections on view...

We finished 5th that season meaning we would have played in Europe bar the events in Belgium at the end of the season.

Strange as it doesn't look a partc good line up,tho Mel Sterland and Imre varadi look lively.

Think Lee Chapman prob weighed in with his fair share of goals..alto he missed two good chances in this game by not heading the ball down. Your keeper Martin Hodges gets done like a kipper when charging out to meet Peter Davenport, but the scouse strikers brilliant body swerve sends him into no man's land! Great finishing by Davenport.

Best goal is from Varadi tho,the swerve on the shot, which I don't think he meant, taking the ball out of steve suttons reach.
Forest were a decent side at the time so all in all a great win for Owls.

David fucking Hirst!

:)

Good player. Good goal, as he out stripped Vonk with pace and power, and I don't remember many forwards doing that to our Dutch destroyer .

Hirst made his England debut in the same match at Wembley as Alan Shearer, and iirc, scored in a 2 nil win.
Thought that was Englands forward partnership for the next few years ,but it never happened for whatever reason, prob injuries.

One of Barnsley s finest.
