The very first of course was the Pioneer but when Manchester Liners was established on 3 May 1898 they built the magnificent Manchester City to fit the dimensions of the canal along with other ships that sailed the route to North America.

I always think it's a shame that all those magnificent ships were just stuck in the docks unable to ever reach the sea until 1894. What a waste.

Didn’t it have a plane next to it? Loads of bars and a plane as an overflow. I seem to remember my uncle talking about it, although he was an extreme alcoholic, so many things he said may or may not have been grounded in reality. Alternatively I could just be going mad, of course.....
