would he say flying the Israeli flag is a sign of supporting zionism and the Belarus flag a signal of one's support for state sponsored piracy? He is a tool and frankly dangerous if he is an example of the leadership and guidance for students at his school

Surely he should just stick to advocating multiculturalism and apolitical education?

One thing I would say is I don't envy someone being in a position of trying to appease all sides driven by a conflict that's been ongoing for 7 decades. He was clearly trying to diffuse issues at a very local level, because there was no need for a political statement otherwise, but people love to feel outraged and are explicitly looking for it now.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The comments are not shocking, by the way. Controversial, yes, but not shocking. I was expecting something far worse when I saw the thread.

he should park his political views where he parks his car and not take them into the classroom

Isn’t that what he was asking the kids to do? Keep politics out of school

You’d have a point if there had been an Israeli flag shown and he took a different approach between the 2, but there wasn’t so I don’t see how you can say he let his political views influence him. Based on the story; other than his words being ill thought through (but possibly reported out of context) I don’t see what he has done wrong here.

Not sure I like any ideology that wraps itself in a flag. I feel this way about Zionists, Palestinians, the EDL, and of course more lately the tories. I get it that flags are symbolic, but they also tend to Nationalism rather than patriotism when they are mobilised in disputes. I agree that teachers should be apolitical, but surely that was sort of the core of this teachers message about (not) displaying flags?
