Been a while since you were in a working men’s club I guess? They most definitely would complain if there was a pricier drink being offered. Bearing in mind anything over £2.80 is considered expensive! Haha!

I wouldn't even know the average price for a pint these days mate. How much is it up north these days? It always was around 2.5 pints to minimum wage back in the day, I think that is pretty much the same down south. Where I am now it's mostly $8 a pint which is around 4.70 quid.

if you are in the so-called northern quarter you can pay up to £7.50 for a guinness. reykjavik prices.

in spoons it's about £3.50 for a real ale

Craft beer is just a modern name for different bitters and ales, if it is a decent bitter it should be in any drinking hole, all come keg or cask like your john smiths does

Boddies and worthys were considered craft ales when they first came out.

Plus wothingtons, smiths, tetley etc are awful and making them "smooth" hasn't changed that they taste shite.

Holts make bitter/mild

Out of town £2.46 - £5

The lowest being spoons, though in some hydes pubs you can get a pint for £2 ish in the day

Titanics one is probably one of the best porters around, and also one of the most popular ales in the country amomgst bitter/porter. drinkers.

Flavouring porters with fruit has been around since the 18th century.

The only reason amber amd pale ales became the nation staple instead of porter/stout which was more commonly drank in the UK vefore the 19th century was due to shortages of ingredients and as such less were produced on draught and was mainly bottled from tgen on until this resurgence of ale as a popular drink

There’s a few pockets of social clubs left up and down the country. Stoke, South Yorkshire and Newcastle being examples. There is still a few dotted round here and there, but as you suggest most have been developed or are derelict, depending on the location.

The general equation was: dwindling sales, business unviable, developer comes along, members vote to take the money.
