Should National Service be mandatory ?

I don't know anything about Norway military service.

This is what wiki says about it

Norway currently employs a weak form of mandatory military service for men and women. For example, in 2010, while 62,873 men and women were called to be examined as persons eligible for military service (the examination being mandatory for men), only 9,631 were actually conscripted.[8] In practice, all recruits deemed eligible for conscription are not forced to serve, with only those who are judged the most motivated actually being selected.[9]

If accurate, that doesn't sound like what people here mean by National service.

I would need to see proof of who had attacked, but it is an interesting question.
At this moment, I trust historic allies far less than historic 'foes'.

Not sure i have read a post containing so much bullshit, bravo sir. You think the majority of his generation were trying to screw the country? It wasn't the politicians? the cost of bigger welfare? medical advancement? the cost of living in a more materialistic world? Covid? Russia?
Please show me this younger generation who are miraculously trying to clear up this mess? I must have missed this huge movement and their achievements so far. I would like to shake their hands individually but this would obviously take forever if they existed which they don't :-)

I’d suggest that people need to look at the reality rather than what is portrayed. I have 2 sons of that age range who would be willing and I’d suggest most of their mates would as well.

Not sure what it is but we seem to be living in a world where people now believe that our youngsters are bone-idle, women-hating, layabouts, when it’s nothing of the sort. The majority do what we did, work hard, have a pint/joint at the weekend, play football on a Sunday, and look for a better life. Yet somehow they’re all portrayed in a bad light.

Personally, I think some need to step away from the internet and stop listening to those that are way past their sell by date, who have no understanding of what our younger generation are challenged with.

Can’t disagree with your point but you must surely see Russia has been testing the resolve of European Countries lately and that many acclaimed military and civilian experts are all suggesting escalation is inevitable, irrespective of how the media or Governments portray this.

Russia has just reverted to type after the later Gorbachev and Yeltsin eras, this is only new to youngsters.

Welcome to Cold War II. In CWI we were told escalation was inevitable by experts too. Of course eventually they will be right.

My personal view? It won’t happen under Putin, but we don’t know what the next guy might be like. Just like we were when Brezhnev became Andropov, Andropov became Chernenko, Chernenko became Gorbachev.

The fear of uncertainty. Putin loves that, he wants it to continue.

*If you're proposing to pay these people, (1) it will be ruinously expensive and (2) your be far better off giving the money to the organisations you want to support to actually employ people who want to be there!

Am sure if you sign up to the to a related engineering role they will teach you from scratch this skill. Don’t know if it’s still the case..
