Pretty sure our trained professional armed forces would find Dwayne and Gaz the 17 year old national service kids who think they’re in Bravo Two Zero because they’ve played Call of Duty far more of a hindrance than a help.

So if we want to increase the size of our forces what do we do then? Wait until it’s too late then just give them a gun and say get on with it, forewarned is forearmed

Increase defence budgets and invest in our professional armed forces, which is what we're doing.

The country won't be made safer with a load of poorly trained national service recruits, ffs.

What I do approve of is the sort of thing they do in Germany though, where as part of your A-level equivalent you have to do some kind of community volunteering, a bit like the D of E scheme here but it is compulsory.

To be fair to him this is what Sunak was really on about during the election campaign but the "national service" nonsense got whipped up by the media in obvious ways.

That's fair enough, but encouraging today's kids to sign up to the army is not what you're asking for. You elected to sign up to the army - making National Service mandatory removes that choice. You're asking for something to be made mandatory that you yourself did not do and are not old enough to have ever done.

And may I remind you that, regardless of our respective histories, you are now also sat behind a keyboard like me. For what it's worth, a list of chronic illnesses I suffer from mean I would be medically exempt from joining the army in the first place. You seem to be trying to win a game called Best British Patriot that I'm not even interested in playing.
