It was the funniest thing I ever saw watching football and City.
It had been snowing heavily all week prior to the weekend and although the match was in doubt the game was played and City lost 2-0
I was stood in the paddock oblivious as to what was about to happen.
City fans were there in usual masses in the open end behind the goal with a few of us in the paddock.
The teams lined up to kick off with the Shrewsbury goalkeeper at the City fans end and City attacking towards our fans.
As soon as the referee signaled to start the City fans started throwing hundreds and hundreds of snowballs non stop which they had amassed without us noticing in the paddock at the Shrewsbury Goalkeeper.
He ran for his life towards the half way line with the snowballs continuing to hit him as he ran away.
The referee stopped play and an announcement was made for the bombardment to cease or the game would be abandoned.
City fans stopped immediately apart from the odd one which was thrown afterwards and we pathetically lost the match.
However i was thinking last night what sort of anti City media coverage we would have got now particularly following the coin throwing episodes.
I don't think the snowballs were even mentioned in the papers or TV but it was very funny at the time and typical of the fun we had on away days.
Was anyone there that day?

I was there for another match against Shrewsbury, a replay in January 1965 after a 1-1 draw at Maine Road.

There was a football special and we piled out of the station to the Gay Meadow. Someone spotted that a gate at the back of the covered terrace had not been locked and it was slid open and we all piled through. The match was dire and Shrewsbury won 3-1. The supporters trudged back to the train very miserable. The players were on the same train and I was horrified that they seemed oblivious to the result and were smoking, drinking and chasing the girls all the way back to Manchester.

Three days later City had their lowest ever Home League crowd in modern times with 8,015 turning out for the visit of Swindon.

The Shrewsbury match turned out to be the last appearance for David Shawcross. Shortly afterwards Johnny Crossan was signed and things started to look up.

I was at that match also. It was the snowballs that I remember so well and the Shrewsbury running to half way line but still being bombed . It was so funny but harmless

Yep, let's not go there!! ;-)

I remember the snowball barrage at Shrewsbury and the PA announcement, 90 mins later I was wishing they had abandoned it .

Same here, bad day all round, I had a ticket in the home side terrace and had a great view of the snowballing. At the end of the game I ran across the pitch and jumped into the City end, next thing I get a smack in the eye off a blue who thought I was a Shrewsbury fan on some sort of Kamikaze mission, received a nice shiner for that. I then got nicked at the station, battered off the coppers and charged with drunk & disorderly. Luckily they released me in time for the last train home and I got served up a £30 fine at a later date.
