It really is unbelievable how much the sim prices have dropped and more power to their elbow. I think my first ever contract was around 30p a minute and £30 a month for a brick and screw on ariel, reminicant of a battlefield wireless.

Back in 2001 I took out a mobile contract which was unlimited texts and 700 minutes of talk time, cost was £80 a month

The good old days. The brick I rented was early 90's I think and the 12 inch battery clipped of the back for charging.

They do use the Three network but only in the UK and not when abroad. I’ve used an IDmobile SIM on my sons phone whilst away in Spain, Italy and Germany and not had any issues streaming in HD (1080p from my home server).

In the UK there’s the odd few places I have seen no coverage, but generally out in the sticks in places like Norfolk and Northern Scotland, but all networks seem poor . My work mobile is on Vodafone, my wife’s on EE and they are no better and very patchy in these areas.

I don’t tend to use it with a Firestick as when we go away we normally rent apartments and villas where Wi-Fi is included.

I know mate, thats why I mentioned the add on £15 roaming pack, which even for a fortnights jollies factors in at only a £1 a day. Better to pay a £1 a day for something that actually works, than for medieval dross that will not stream for our firestick. Three were beyond useless over the last few outings, and we tried all and sundry to rectify the issues.

We swapped phones to eliminate hardware and tried the firestick in a different room setting. We changed phone settings were correct including the detailed ones for roaming and we also changed servers such as Moviestar and Orange etc but all to no avail. The wifes EE chip streamed like a hero throughout, so sometimes all that glitters aint gold.

The only plusable explanation was that Smarty aka Three was restricting download speed with the networks abroad to save money. Again happy tp pay a few pence more for roaming charges in exchange for a stronger network supplier.

The wi-fi's a god send as always, but a lot of our cheaper hotel and apartment signals are patchy, save for the lobby areas. Sometimes even in good hotels they can be sketchy in the room. I guess the firestick does take a bigger hit feeding heavy on the download speed but it's a life saver for TV in the room after spending a busy day browning the bits.

The three and UK networks utilise the EU networks, but I wager the lower cost options such as smarty only pay the Eu companies such as Moviestar a lower download speed tarif.

Never really had much lumber with 3 network back home and can only praise them for their value. Just not for the abroad crack.
 
Thanks everyone. Went with the @Kompany Car recommendation and got a free 50gb/month so 150gb for about 8/month (12/month but you get a 50 quid amazon voucher when signing up bringing it down)

I've recently gone back to EE on a sim only 18 month contract. £7.20 per month unlimited calls and texts and 40 GB of data.
