Singers who can't sing

Can't believe no-one's mentioned Bernard Sumner yet. That said, New Order probably wouldn't sound right without his bum notes.

Simon le Bon's vocals always sounded very strained to me. And Whitney Houston doesn't sing, she just shouts.

That's class...I rest my case, m'lud!!!

for me during the Britpop era it was so obvious Damon Albarn cannot sing live he is awful yet he has somehow managed to have some moderate success with the Gorillaz as well. Never been able to figure it out even though i liked Blurs songs I think with a stronger signer they would have been a lot bigger.

I can't stand Billy Joe Armstrong's style of singing and the way he tries to act the hardman on stage...eurghh what a prick.

Also.................Thom Yorke??? wtf

To go alongside Malg's thread about bad actors.

I give you Brett Anderson from Suede.

Love the music but cannot get beyond a couple of songs at a time because his voice makes my ears dislike me.

So, are you saying you don't like his singing, or that he can't sing. There's a world of difference. I can't comment on his recent work but the first two Suede albums were actually nothing short of the dogs bollocks, quite awesome songsmithery and vocals in equal measure.

Ian Brown can't sing for toffee but he's my fave frontman of all time. Great delivery, stage presence etc etc. Kurt Cobain screamed so hard you'd think he'd have shredded his throat by the end of a show, but he sounded awesome. The fact that someone isn't a technically gifted singer takes nothing away from their performance.

Mark E Smith on the other hand........ (only joking)

Good post BB and I agree with you. Anderson can undoubtedly sing and I guess it comes down to personal taste. I just cannot bear his voice.

To be honest I can't listen to The Kings of Leon for any more than 3 tracks as the guys voice just annoys me. I'm probably on my own with that one, as they are outrageously popular.

Billy Bragg
Andy Cole( R'n'B/rap single "Outstanding" in 2000)
Paul Gascoigne(Gazza iin the early 90s with his legendary single Fog on the Tyne)
Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle(80's synth-pop classic "Diamond Lights".)
Top Of The Pops the last 3,not sure about Cole.Might be footballers but they fancied themselves as singers/pop stars.
