Great watch this. It was before my time, but my dad maintains that he was the best player he ever saw. English too. I love watching stuff like this.

Did they dig him up?

Talking to Ken Barnes a good few years ago, and he said that, when Matthews was near the end of his playing career and had lost most of his pace, he whinged to the referee every time someone took the ball off him. A bit like Rughead does these days.

Having said that, still one hell of a player.

I'm sure I saw him at Maine Road, must have been 1964/65, play in a testimonial or something. He'd retired by then but the match involved a combined City:United XI against a select team that included Matthews, Finney and Uwe Seeler. Might have been Bert Trautmann's testimonial.

Can anyone confirm this?

you mean john charles that played for juventus?

When I lived in Stoke, I knew someone who told me that John Charles was the best player he ever saw. He reckoned 'The Gentle Giant' could play centre-forward or centre-half equally as well.

As for Sir Stan, I read a biography on him not long after I became interested in football and he's been my favourite non-City player ever since.
