Sir Tom Finney

There's a story that Bill Shankly was once asked about the relative merits of Tom Finney and Kevin Keegan.

'Nothing to choose between them', he said.

Then he added: 'Of course, you have to remember that Tom Finney is 56 years old'.

RIP Sir Tom.

rip Sir Tom a true great and gentleman to boot

I'm on the horns of a dilemma with this one, you see my Father in Law; himself a lovely man and lifelong Preston fan who met and got to know Sir Tom in a nodding and "how are you today!" kind of way, is currently fighting for his life in Wythenshawe Hospital, his operation on an aortic aneurysm didn't go quite right and the medics are weighing the risk / reward of further surgery today -clearly not looking great. The dilemma is should I tell him about Sir Tom? Can't see any win win in this. My wife and I are going in to see him and the medics this morning

Hope he pulls through, plongo.

RIP Tom Finney.

A great player and a great man. Conducted himself with real dignity.

Got to say he sounds like a brilliant bloke . Another legend that will be in the history of football forever .

I didn't know much about him as a man, but reading up since he sounded a Stella bloke. Rip.

There was a superb obituary in The Times today. One and a half pages.

In one FA Cup match, the score was level with two minutes to go when Finney managed to get a goal. "Can't have a replay next week" he told his teammate. "I'm fitting a bathroom"

That made me laugh. RIP old man.

I saw Finney 2 or 3 times at Maine Road, but he was well into his thirties and I was well short of being 10, so I certainly can't give an educated opinion of him as a player. My dad and grandpa revered him in a way you simply don't feel for players of other teams now, and a list of old pros, which includes (admittedly team mates) like Shankly and Doherty never hesitated to say he was the best player they had ever seen. How unfortunate then that many of the TV tributes seem to limit themselves to emphasising what a nice man he was and even what an excellent local plumber he was. He'll actually be remembered as a footballer, by general agreement one of - if not the - greatest players born in these islands. I know there probably isn't much film left of Finney in action, but there is surely more than we've seen since he died. And now he's gone to Heaven - which sounds like the only venue fit to host his talents.
