skiing in chamonix

Chamonix is located over several different areas all linked by bus which is covered on your ski pass. If your going for a weekend, i would just stick to the smaller pass but if possible, get the pass that covers Mont Blanc. After last weeks storms the pistes will be in great nick. Ive just booked the 3V for Feb 4th, cant wait!!!

I know someone who works in a chalet over there. If you let me know exactly where you're going I can ask them.

get the full pass, you can ski in france and jump on the bus through the tunnel and ski italy in the afternoon in cormayer (sp)

stunning place.

Just for three days skiing, probably just the area lift pass. Depends what type of skiing you like doing, if you think you would get the most out of it or not.

rickmcfc- I had a week in the 3V in December, my first time over there- absolutely loved it! What resort are you staying in?

Staying in a place called Reberty 2000, part of Les Menuires. Not the prettiest of places but right on the slopes! The group of chalets on the right, mine is 4th from the left!
Never been before, really can't wait!

i'm going out by EuroStar the week after!!!
we're staying in Saint Martin De Belleville which is my favourite because its a small village and still has Savoyard charm with easy connections over to Meribel and Mottaret
Its also much quieter down there

Half term week that, will be busy. Can you recommend me any of your favourite runs? I've heard Jerusalem is a good one?
Jerusalem is brilliant, its the run down into St Martin and no bugger uses it because its out on a limb

if you are good skier try the Mont De Vallon reds, one either side of the Gondala, both challenging and very long
Also spend an afternoon on the Pointe De La Masse runs, usually quieter in the afternoon and great snow as they are north facing

if you like unbelievably moguled deep snow attempt the Combe de Rosael at the top of the Cime de Caron (Val Thorens) lift and drop into Orelle, we did it last year because we went up there by accident and my two mates wouldn't speak to us for two days after it
In Val Thorens do the reds off the Funitel Peclet
Finally in Val Thorens, go down the bosmint run and eat in the restaurant on the corner, its excellent

Sput, to complicate things further there's now a 3rd pass, the Chamonix rapid card....

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.compagniedumontblanc.fr/en/lift-passes" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.compagniedumontblanc.fr/en/lift-passes</a>

Careful because it looks like it's 40 euro per day but there's a 50 euro subscription fee too.

I'd advise you not to make your choice until you get there. If the weather is shite and windy you don't want to ski L'Argentiere as it's very exposed and may want to go down to Les Houches, which is not on Le Pass (It's on the unlimited or a local pass). If the weather is good and you're not an expert skier there's plenty on Le Pass to keep you occupied. You won't be able to ski the glaciers on Le Pass if that's what floats your boat.
Bottom of Argentiere glacier from Les Grand Montets is doable for anyone confident on blacks but for anything not pisted go with someone who knows where they are going or get a guided group or guide.

Which is the shite lift out of town folks? Flegere or Planpraz and was it replaced (it's slow with big queues and some lad was dicking about and forced the door open and fell out). Use the other one.

Oh btw Sput, go on Snowheads.com and have a look on there

Cheers Carver,

Im an ok skier and can take on any runs, not that graceful on blacks mind.... im taking my son who is similar to me... i think Le pass maybe the one... but eill wait till i get there.. doesnt look like the price is any cheaper online anyway....

No worries Sput.

In my opinion it's not worth the extra on 2 lift passes for 3 days, if you are happy on and at the side of the piste there's plenty, but remember my comment about the bad weather. If you do go to Les Houches thet's where all the kids ski schools are, but it can be less crowded than the other resorts due to not being on Le Pass.

If you are going to Les Houches the Kandahar mens world cup event takes place on the Verte piste (green by name, not by nature) in February. Downhill is 3rd & 4th, Super combined is 5th. You will be able to ski there but access will be limited and of course that part of the mountain will be packed with spectators. You'll be able to ski it days/weeks after the event but be warned, the piste will be eff off rock hard ice in most places, just the way the pros like it. There's a drop off on a right bend 3/4 of the way down. My ski buddies got too low and we had to go down it, 5 decent skiers all fell but I managed to sideslip down it and keep my camcorder intact. You won't be able to ski down it unless you're a racer, it's fall, attempt a sideslip like me or go down on your arse. I think you can get round it on the left, this is where they go if conditions are not ideal, for the Super G and women's downhill. I skied on a day out to St Moritz when a women's downhill was on and access wasn't really a problem, it added to the buzz. There's 2 ways up the mountain unless you're coming over from St Gervais.
