So easy to play through

Thanks. Great post.

Be interesting to see what happens next season. Fernandinho has one year left on his contract. Wonder what will happen with that.
I hope Pep finds a place for him. His relentless pressing might well be an asset in a team that press properly. In a team where only 1 or 2 players press, it's a nightmare, and rather than formulating a way of playing that's thoroughly thought out, it appears Pellegrini has simply tried to mask a big team weakness with an individual strong point. So in other words, he's tried to make up for a lack of team pressing, by having one player relentlessly press, while the rest of the team get stuck between a press and a contain.

Personally i think he's a better asset out wide than he is in the centre. His pressing and fitness can lock down the flank, and missed presses are less dangerous than they are centrally. I think we need a couple of right backs anyway so i do think he would be a good option. Either that or he plays a Vidal kind of role, but i'm not sure that would entitle him to be a starter week in week out, depending who we bring in of course.

Just to bump this again from 4 years ago. The exact same thing happens for Leicester's first goal. Dinho tried to press Amartey on the halfway line, got turned, and 5 seconds later we concede a penalty.

Again, it's an issue with playing pressing roulette at a point in the game where it is not really necessary.

Sometimes I think Fernandinho tries to over compensate for the lack of mobility we have in the defensive unit of the midfield. Or when he can feel the opposition getting a grip on things, he tries physically do something (pressing) as opposed to mentally doing something (containing).

I tend to think a high press with a 35 year old midfielder initiating is an accident waiting to happen, particularly as it exposes our second huge problem once the press is beaten....

And this is the fact that we cannot defend 1v1. Only Kyle Walker can defend 1v1 high up the pitch. Every one else has to retreat and eventually get beaten (or give a dangerous free kick away) because they don't have the pace. Garcia in this system is a disaster waiting to happen (regardless of how good he can look for periods of the game), as is Stones.

Kompany was excellent at defending 1v1's, which is why he is so greatly missed. He was great at engaging high up and either taking the ball or taking the man. I tend to think Koulibaly would have given us similar qualities in this regard.

I haven't seen enough of Dias to judge whether or I think he helps with this issue, but if he doesn't, we may need to abandon the press as we are not capable of dealing with the result of getting the press wrong.
