So....who are the more modern city legends then?

There hasn't been a true legend since Colin Bell but i am sure there will be one or two over the next few years, the closest is probably the goat.

What about Joe Corrigan?

Agreed

England keeper alongside Shilton and Clemence..talk about bad timing he would have been Englands number one in any other generation. His two "man of the match" performances in the 81 FA cup Final and replay were superb...he was a TRUE city legend.

I would love to see a statue of Big Joe, alongside statues of Bell, Lee ,Sumerbee, Goater, Lake, Kinkladze,Rosler..and Big Helen, outside our ground!

On another note..how about Alex Williams for true City legend?..thoughts?

I wish we could have had Ali B for longer, meaning when he was younger, fuck me he would have become one of the biggest legends at City of all time.

Amazing little player, who had every trick in the book, who remembers the back heel up in the air pass to the Goat at Gillingham, who volleyed it in.....class player would deffo have earned legendary status in the long run

When it comes to Legends, not many Clubs can name three goalkeepers who can be considered in that bracket, we have Swift, Trautman and Corrigan. I think but for injury, Alex Williams could have joined that list.

Ah, whenever the word 'legend' comes out, City's Real Ale drinking snobs come out and claim this and that player isn't a legend because they haven't won anything.

Well, there's no way you could ever convince me that Shaun Goater is not a City legend and see lesser men qualify just because they happened to have been at the club in a more successful period of time. Imagine if a red dipper or a rag came on here claiming that the player has to have won a European Cup (Champions League) before being classed as legend. Then we'd have none. What about if they had to have won a league title? No Billy Meredith and no Bert Trautmann etc. How about coming up with some decent criteria before being arse-y about it?

Terrace idols/cult favourites and genuine City legends are two very different things and sometimes people mistake the two.

Okay sometimes a player can be both but guys like Dickov fall solely into the former category.

Legends should transcend City and be respected elsewhere in football.

That would be my criteria. That they didnt just make their mark at City but also on the world of football in general.

I see where you're coming from on that but then would someone like George Weah qualify? Or Anelka? Or Denis Law? Do they have to be a City player at the time they're making their mark? Then there's the likes of Buzzer who barely had a proper England international career like Bell and Lee. Does he fail the test?

They certainly have to play for City at their peak (which would rule out the Weahs and Schmeichels et al) but what I mean is that when such a player excelled for City they were also highly respected elsewhere.
You're right about Buzzer not having the England career of Bell and Lee but he was highly thought of in the footballing world as a whole and not just within the confines of Maine Road. So of course Summerbee qualifies as a genuine legend.

But you're right though mate. My criteria doesnt really stand up because it would rule out the likes of Rosler and Goater who, not just for their achievements on the pitch, but the way they've represented our club with dignity up to the present day, thoroughly deserve modern-day legend status.

It would unjustly rule out Dunne too who bizarrely is not regarded as highly as he should be elsewhere in football. It only seems to be ourselves (and now Villa fans) who realize how awesome the guy can be.

But certainly, as a general rule of thumb, its a significant aspect to consider I think when weighing this up.
Is the player 'just' a cult terrace favourite. Or is he a genuine legend?

For me Dickov and Andy Morrison are cult icons, loved for their tenacity and passion in a City shirt. But definitely not legends to be mentioned in the same breath as Trautmann, Bell etc.

Cult status should be conferred on the following XI:

Cooper, Fleming, Hinchcliffe, Gayle, Redmond, White, Brightwell, Bishop, Lake, Oldfield and Morley.

Plus Jason Beckford, of course!

"A legend (Latin, legenda, "things to be read") is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history and to possess certain qualities that give the tale verisimilitude."

Hence any player who great stories are told about over and over again is a legend.

Dickov's goal in '99 will never be forgotten by this club and it's fans and so will be talked about for years to come. The goal is legendary, the man is a legend.

Goater is a legend, not merely for making Gary Neville look like a bigger prick or for scoring over 100 goals for City but for everything he's done for the club while we had a very shaky period.

Some may say that it's too soon to class Tevez as a legend but tales will be told for years and years of his move across town, his branding of Gary Neville as a 'boot-licking moron' and of course his goal scoring exploits in the season that changed the course of our history for ever. This season will be talked about as the turning point, and Tevez, as player of the season, will be talked about just as much, and had it not been for him the season would have had a very different outcome.

You could even go as far as to say that tales of Bellamy slapping a rag fan will be shared for many years but I think you'd be pushing it then.

Tales of Richard Dunne's defensive heroics should also in my opinion be continued to be told, making him a legend. These are just a few examples but being only 21 I struggle to remember much before about '96-'97 so I'm sure some people will say the likes of Rosler, Kinkladze and Quinn should be mentioned.

Where is Glauber Berti? The age old question!

pmsl Andy Hinchcliffe is no where near 'B' legend or any legend status!

Tut tut! Short memories some people.

Member of the '86 youth cup team that beat the rags in the final , scored the final goal in the legendary 5-1 demolition of the rags, laid on the passes for at least two of the goals in the famous 10-1 victory over Huddersfield, was a regular in the side at 18 years old and along with White, Lake, Redmond et al represented England as an under 21s whilst still playing for us. To be honest I'd be struggling to name a better left back in the last 25 years at City than Andy Hinchcliffe (Pearce was beyond his peak when he signed). Wayne Bridge possesses some of Hinchcliffe's qualities, but he doesn't tackle as well and does not cross, or strike a ball, as effectively as Andy Hinchcliffe.

So, he may not make my A list, but definitely a good shout for a substitute legend.

But it's all about opinions...

I think in future times, Tevez will/might be named as a legend.Especially if he carrys on the form he is currently in, and if he stays with us for a few more seasons!
