These are from 1979 and Squeeze.....Brilliant.

I never thought it would happen
With me and a girl from Clapham
Out on the windy common
That night I ain't forgotten
When she dealt out the rations
With some or other passions
I said: "You are a lady"
"Perhaps" she said: "I may be"

We moved into a basement
With thoughts of our engagement
We stayed in by the telly
Although the room was smelly
We spent our time just kissing
The Railway Arms we're missing
But love had got us hooked up
And all our time it took up

I got a job with Stanley
He said I'd come in handy
And started me on Monday
So I had a bath on Sunday
I worked eleven hours
And bought the girl some flowers
She said she'd seen a doctor
And nothing now could stop her

I worked all through the winter
The weather brass and bitter
I put away a tenner each week to make her better
And when the time was ready
We had to sell the telly
Late evenings by the fire
And little kicks inside her
This morning at four-fifty
I took her rather nifty
Down to an incubator
Where thirty minutes later
She gave birth to a daughter
Within a year a walker
She looked just like her mother
If there could be another

And now she's two years older
Her mother's with a soldier
She left me when my drinking
Became a proper stinging
The Devil came and took me
From bar to street to bookie
No more nights by the telly
No more nights nappies smelling
Alone here in the kitchen
I feel there's something missing
I'd beg for some forgiveness
But begging's not my business
And she won't write a letter
Although I always tell her
And so it's my assumption
I'm really up the junction
This and Virginia Plain by Roxy Music both reached number 2 in the charts and they were the only two songs that ever have reached that high in the charts where the name of the song was only sung in the last line.
What a crap fact.
Oh and Squeeze are my favourite band of all time - that’s not a crap fact though cos they’re brill.

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground Control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may God's love be with you
Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One, Lift off
This is Ground Control to Major Tom
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare
This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do
Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much she knows
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you...
Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do

He said he wrote this as a play in three minutes, his 'Play for Today' for BBC

The distant echo
Of faraway voices boarding faraway trains
To take them home to
The ones that they love and who love them forever
The glazed, dirty steps
Repeat my own and reflect my thoughts
Cold and uninviting, partially naked
Except for toffee wrappers and this morning's papers
Mr. Jones got run down
Headlines of death and sorrow, they tell of tomorrow
Madmen on the rampage
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight, oh

I fumble for change, and pull out the Queen
Smiling, beguiling
I put in the money and pull out a plum
Behind me
Whispers in the shadows, gruff blazing voices
Hating, waiting
"Hey boy" they shout, "Have you got any money?"
And I say, "I've a little money and a takeaway curry
I'm on my way home to my wife
She'll be lining up the cutlery, you know she's expecting me
Polishing the glasses and pulling out the cork"
I'm down in the tube station at midnight, oh

I first felt a fist, and then a kick
I could now smell their breath
They smelt of pubs, and wormwood scrubs
And too many right wing meetings
My life swam around me
It took a look and drowned me in its own existence
The smell of brown leather
It blended in with the weather
Filled my eyes, ears, nose and mouth, it blocked all my senses
Couldn't see, hear, speak any longer
I'm down in the tube station at midnight, oh
I said I was down in the tube station at midnight, oh

The last thing that I saw as I lay there on the floor
Was "Jesus saves" painted by an atheist nutter
And a British Rail poster read
"Have an away day, a cheap holiday, do it today"
I glanced back on my life, and thought about my wife
'Cause they took the keys, and she'll think it's me
I'm down in the tube station at midnight
The wine will be flat and the curry's gone cold
I'm down in the tube station at midnight, oh
Don't want to go down in a tube station at midnight, oh
Don't want to go down in a tube station at midnight, oh
Don't want to go down in a tube station at midnight, oh
Don't want to go down in a tube station at midnight, oh

All of Kendrick Lamar's album good kid, m.A.A.d. city.

Good explanation of the plot here:

Track listing:

  • Sherane a.k.a Master Splinter’s Daughter
  • woman Don’t Kill My Vibe
  • Backseat Freestyle
  • Art of Peer Pressure
  • Money Trees
  • Poetic Justice
  • Good Kid
  • M.A.A.D. City
  • Swimming Pools
  • Sing About Me, Dying of Thirst
  • Real
  • Compton
PLOT:

- Kendrick meets a girl, Sherane, at a house party over the summer. He continues to stay in touch with her and they start a fling even though her family and close friends are known to be dangerous. At the end of track #1, he drives over to Sherane's house after borrowing his mom's van but gets jumped by two guys. Kendrick's mom calls him to bring the van back but she only gets his voicemail ("Sherane").
- In the early afternoon, Kendrick drives his mom's van to go and hang out with his friends - he dumps the van and they cruise around LA during the day, hassling people and rapping to beat CDs ("woman Don't Kill My Vibe", "Backseat Freestyle").
- As evening comes around, the boys stage a home invasion robbery and almost get caught. After getting away from the cops, Kendrick's friends drop him back off at his mom’s van so he can go meet up with Sherane again. His friends make plans to meet up again later that night. ("Art of Peer Pressure")
- We get an explanation for the financial motives behind the robbery ("Money Trees") and then we go back to the start of the day, just after Kendrick has been jumped. ("Sherane", "Poetic Justice")
- After getting jumped and taking part in a robbery in the same day, he realises he's probably not equipped to deal with the dangerous situation he's found himself in. He ends up getting roughed up by the police who think he's affiliated with a gang ("good kid"). He's paranoid that people know about him and are out to get him ("m.A.A.d. city")
- Later that night, Kendrick links up with his friends again and they decide to show Kendrick the benefits of drinking his problems away ("Swimming Pools"), but then they see the guys that jumped Kendrick and shoot at them (end of "Swimming Pools").
- During the exchange of fire, Kendrick’s friend Dave is shot and killed ("Swimming Pools"). Afterwards, Dave's brother and Kendrick talk about Dave, as well as Dave's sister - Kendrick then raps about Dave and his sister ("Sing about me, dying of thirst")
- Angry and desperate after what's happened, Dave's brother wants to get revenge on the people who killed Dave, but Kendrick and his friends get guidance from an older woman in their community who sees blood on their shirts and shows them the need for religion ("Sing about me, dying of thirst")
- Kendrick’s dad calls him and leaves another voicemail, giving condolences for his friend being killed, but saying that they shouldn’t retaliate and that they should instead focus on family and god.
- Kendrick’s mom calls again about the van, which still hasn’t been returned, and says she thinks it was a good idea that Kendrick and his friends prayed. She also says that Top Dog Entertainment wants Kendrick to stop by the studio and reminds Kendrick to take music seriously. ("Real")
- Then we hear from Kendrick years later, who tells us that he made it out ("Compton"). Then we hear one more voicemail from Kendrick’s mom, which is from the beginning of the story, asking him to just bring the van back.

Springsteen has done a lot, but these two struck particular chords with me from the same album, 'The Rising'.

The first being the plight of an immigrant trying to find a better life:

Matamoros Banks

For two days the river keeps you down
Then you rise to the light without a sound
Past the playgrounds and empty switching yards
The turtles eat the skin from your eyes, so they lay open to the stars
Your clothes give way to the current and river stone
'Till every trace of who you ever were is gone
And the things of the earth they make their claim
That the things of heaven may do the same
Goodbye, my darling, for your love I give God thanks,
Meet me on the Matamoros
Meet me on the Matamoros
Meet me on the Matamoros banks
Over rivers of stone and ancient ocean beds
I walk on sandals of twine and tire tread
My pockets full of dust, my mouth filled with cool stone
The pale moon opens the earth to its bones
I long, my darling, for your kiss, for your sweet love I give God thanks
The touch of your loving fingertips
Meet me on the Matamoros
Meet me on the Matamoros
Meet me on the Matamoros banks
Your sweet memory comes on the evenin' wind
I sleep and dream of holding you in my arms again
The lights of Brownsville, across the river shine
A shout rings out and into the silty red river I dive
I long, my darling, for your kiss, for your sweet love I give God thanks
A touch of your loving fingertips
Meet me on the Matamoros
Meet me on the Matamoros
Meet me on the Matamoros banks
Meet me on the Matamoros
Meet me on the Matamoros
Meet me on the Matamoros banks

and the second, I believe, is about a war vet. The lyrics speak for themselves...

Nothing Man

I don't remember how I felt
I never thought I'd live
To read about myself
In my hometown paper
How my brave young life
Was forever changed
In a misty cloud of pink vapor
Darlin' give me your kiss
Only understand
I am, the nothing man
Around here, everybody acts the same
Around here, everybody acts like nothing's changed
Friday night, the club meets at Al's Barbecue
The sky's still, the same unbelievable blue
Darlin' give me your kiss
Come take my hand
I am, the nothing man
You can call me Joe
Buy me a drink and shake my hand
You want courage
I'll show you courage you can understand
The pearl and silver
Restin' on my night table
It's just me Lord, pray I'm able
Darlin' with this kiss
Say you understand
I am, the nothing man
I am, the nothing man
