There are songs out there that, when you hear them, immediately remind you of a moment or a period of time, long or short, that makes you look back and well up to the point of tears. They could be happy songs; sad songs; great songs; songs so bad that you like them. Let's crack open the tunes and crack open the tissues.
On Melancholy Hill by Gorillaz takes me back to the summer of 2010. I was deeply in love with my girlfriend, deeply in love with my friends and had ten weeks off after my GCSEs. I was looking forward to a summer of ice cream, no worries, kisses, good times and my birthday. The week I spent around my house with my girlfriend was the week that Gorillaz played Glastonbury. On my birthday, I woke up and walked upstairs to where my girlfriend had been sleeping (I had been sleeping on the floor downstairs) and I walked in to wake her up. I left her to regain herself, and as I was listening to 'On Melancholy Hill' live, she walked into the room, looking the way she did, and the way she still does. What an excellent memory of an excellent summer.
Fifteen Fathoms, Counting by Bring Me the Horizon reminds me of one of the best days of my life so far. Me, and between nine and ten of my friends went to spend one last day with one of our friends group, who was leaving to live in Bristol. We sent the whole day walking from the Peel Shopping Centre in Stockport to Brinnington. All the way their, we listened to Bring Me the Horizon's first album. And when this song came on, we just happened to be lying in a field in the sun. It completed what was a good day. Of course, emotions were running high as we said goodbye, seperately, to my friend who was leaving the next day.
Wake Up by The Arcade Fire reminds me of Wembley on Saturday. Seeing everyone dancing around, hearing everyone around me joining in with the 'oooooh-aaaaah-oooh-aahh-oooh-oooh' was the moment I realised just what City had achieved. Saturday will be the greatest day of my footballing life, even if we win the damn thing. We beat United at Wembley. What a script that was! What a day it was. Not even the headache from dehydration and the noise could stop me from smiling. It made me proud to be City; to be blue.
