She doesn’t have that effect on me, but I do think the singers voice is the biggest single off-putter for me with music. The dodgy lyrics, even dodgy music I can often get past, but the wrong voice and I’m out, immediately and with extreme prejudice.
From Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Michael Stipe, a lot of Morrissey, Radiohead through to the female wailers and over-emoters like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Jessie J and the rest.

Absolutely. Well, it used to be before auto tune destroyed the industry. These days music is used as a PR exercise to raise social media profiles.

Idiosyncrasies of voices are what makes you love or loathe them. Some singers can invoke both feelings if they are able to change their style.

Mariah Carey is one of those for me. Occasionally, when she isn’t trying to show off her voice to the max, she has a beautiful voice. Fantasy, however, is utterly awful as she goes way OTT.
